    Our Dedicated New Forum:http://ares-project.com/
Well I decided to update the description because its been a while. So nothing much has happened except for the fact that we've set up a little fancy chatroom aswell as a little skype channel for our talkative supporters. But well I just feel as if the previous description didn't seem to fit anymore, we've also gotten some help from Zidonuke to set up us a little forum, I supplied the link above if you are interested.

    Story time!
    Prelude:
In times past there were seven different races each inhabiting their own individual planet. As these races grew in number and intelligence, they eventually stood tall as the dominant species of their homeworlds. As their species continued to advance in technology they became aware of each others presence and realized they were not alone in the universe.

Eventually they were able to hold a meeting of the seven, where each race came forward to meet each other. Soon after this first meeting, a union of friendship between them was struck. They called this alliance "The Imperium of Planets" and this Empire continued to thrive for millons upon millions of years, so much so that it began to reach the outer rims of their own Galaxy.

As the Imperium continued to spread through the galaxy, they realized that they would eventually be running out of space to colonize. To this end they started researching and developing a prototype Jumpgate. This gate once activated would allow a large vessel, capable of moving a full colony through to another galaxy. As the Project completed, they selected a fully equipped colony vessel and activated the Jumpgate and sent them through.

The Jumpdrive appeared to send them to the distant galaxy succesfully, but in the process it overloaded and destroyed itself in the process, leaving the colonists stranded on the other side, and the Imperium no way to contact them. These Stranded colonists survived the catastrophe however, and within their new galaxy they created their own new empire.

This new Metropolitan Republic expanded and grew into a small system of planets, but never even coming close to the grandeur of the Imperium.. As the Republic expanded crime grew rampant in their streets, poverty was at an all time high and they needed something to keep the system together. Then, their mysterious leader came, he turned the tides of chaos and united crime under one banner, the Redshift Syndicate which did before a century had passed the Syndicate had efficiently puppeted Metropolitan Republic, seeing as most of them were corrupt and in the syndicate's pocket and nobody ever noticed anything.

Their skill and excellence achieved only through the guidance of their mysterious leader. Meanwhile the Imperium was being attacked by a mysterious threat, The Devourers, A mysterious race of void-beings with the power who destroy any worlds they come across.

Most of Imperium Space already having been devoured only a few dozen solar systems remaining, as the Imperial Remnant looked through their records for anything that could help them they came across the old schematics for the Jumpgate, they came together, amassed as many people as they could and built the engine, in the last possible minute they moved through it a fleet of thousands of colonists looking for a new home, as they used the same astronavigation charts the Metropolitans used several thousand years ago they ended up in the same galaxy, the Metropolitans and the Redshift Syndicate were surprised as they met with their lost bretherin, as they had all but forgotten that there was ever another empire.

The Redshifts in guise of the Nebula Exchange approached their new neighbours looking for a trade partnership, seeing no harm in this the Remnant accepted. As a criminal organization the Redshifts also annexed the mob from the Imperial Remnant once more creating a crime monopoly. The Imperium was dying, however slowly. The people inside their borders grew into political factions and eventually split off, some went their own ways into space making small colonies on other planets, the majority split into two political factions, the totalitarianistic, but well-meaning police state dubbed the Intergalactic Defense Force, taking up a majority of the citizenship. The other part split into the economical expansionist community named the Singularity Extract Corporation.

This conflict quickly escalated into a cold war, and of course the Redshift Syndicate, turned their sights on this conflict, and they hired an army of gangsters/mercenaries to raid and uphold the balance within this conflict raiding the targets they see fit.. This organization of bandits and pillagers were dubbed the Ironstar Raiders, selling their loot to the Exchange, meanwhile the Exchange sells their goods to the SEC and the IDF, both.

    Intergalactic Defense Force:
These guys are the self proclaimed good guys. They are a police state, meaning sortof the big brother organization of the galaxy.
They are a pretty much an entirely militaristic faction with a focus on upholding order and keeping their populace safe, they are the self-proclaimed intergalactic police and their worlds are often ruled strictly with rules and regulations for everything, and armed military forces standing on every corner.

They have three main branches; the Technology Division ( Tetrahedron Physics ) whose focus includes but is not limited to the creation and development of new IDF technology.

The Restorative/Maintenance Division whose focus is to keep the galaxy in balance by upholding ecosystems and cities, terraforming planets and generally making IDF space a better place to live.

Last but not least the Military Division (Aegis Squadron), which is responsible for the integration of new planets into the IDF, the defense of IDF property and the termination of hostile forces. They are also responsible for policing of IDF space.

The entire Organization is ruled by the Council of Generals, a small big brother organization filled with mainly military leaders but also some scientists and other.

    Singularity Extract Corporation:
A civilization of capitalistic expansionists. Their focus on keeping a powerful military and expanding as much as possible has earned them enemies within the IDF, in comparison to the IDF the SEC is a much more free civilization, privacy is valued in SEC society, which the IDF cannot comprehend, they believe that the way to wealth and fortune comes through the freedom to make it on your own. The leaders of society are elected, but because credits are such a valued commodity their leaders are corrupt and their state answers to the will of the companies. The SEC has three branches aswell, Security, Mining and Administration.

The Mining Branch (Core Development ) is responsible for extracting valuable and useful materials from SEC worlds, as the SEC expand across their new worlds the Mining Branch will grow in size quickly, and though life in the Mining Branch involves hard work they are all treated with a fair salary and proper health care, provided for a price of course. Nothing is free in SEC space.

The Administration Branch (Zetta Financial ) is in charge of all SEC operations; they can be Facility Administrators, Lawyers, Diplomats, anyone who is anybody within the SEC systems is a member of the Administration Branch. The Administration Branch are the ones behind the lines making everything happen, and of course their advisors and lawyers. Can't be a proper businessman without a batch of lawyers.

The Security Branch ( Section 8 ) is responsible for keeping SEC citizens alive and well, aswell the security of SEC assets and the elimination of any hostile forces within SEC worlds, not to mention they also serve as a military force.. The group is comprimised of both IDF Milita and Mercenaries. The mercenaries being the bulk of SEC forces while most of the Militia serving more of a police role.

    Redshift Syndicate:

The Redshift Syndicate is a massive crime monopoly caused by the lack of threat caused by competators. They control the puppet state of the Metropolitan Republic. And pretty much all the crime in the galaxy, their main sources of income include but are not limited to, extortion, fraud, robbery, and most importantly interplanetary trade. Their leader is only known by the alias Loki. But he is known to be a mastermind when it comes to numbers and calculations as well as facilitiating communications.

The Ironstar Raiders are mercenaries and gangsters hired by the Redshift Syndicate to uphold the balance between the SEC and the IDF, their kind ranges from the drunk mercenary in your local cantina to the calculated killer. They often travel in small groups, raiding trade routes and often taking out targets for the Redshift Syndicate. The plunder they collect from their raids are often sold to on the Nebula Exchange, giving the shady organization another source of profit.

As for the Nebula Exchange, they are responsible for the Redshift Syndicate's illegal marketplace aswell as providing a front for the Redshift Syndicate's business. The Nebula Exchange also deals with recruiting or eliminating any new street gangs or mobs, taking protection money. Upholding their "relations" (taking all of the bribes, getting new people in their pocket, et.c) with the Metropolitan Republic.

This is it for now, we will add more or eventually extract some stuff when the beta is out. I doubt there will be any significant changes to the lore as of now seeing as we are all not only quite busy but also contempt with it's current state X3
If you want to get access to the skype channel you'll have to contact one of the current members, which includes me and Zephyr, you can do this through a conversation on the forums or adding me on steam (since like steam) then I'll just add you to my skype and I'll add you from there. Our IRC chatroom has the address #StarboundProjectAres

SKYPE CHANNEL: Contact me through steam, or the forums. You can also try to contact Zeph or Zidonuke or any of the other staff for that manner, yet I think you should stick with me seeing as all this PR stuff is kinda my thing?
IRC CHATROOM: Use an IRC client to connect to #StarboundProjectAres. One way of doing this would be connecting by clicking the LIVE CHAT link on playstarbound.com and changing the address from #Starbound to #StarboundProjectAres.
Another would be installing a dedicated chat client, such as IceChat.

    Current Staff are as follows. I will update as responsibilities change, and as we add more people;
    Zephyrspark : Lore-writing, Server maintenance. Head-admin ;3
Profound Madness: Lore-writing, PR and leader of the Redshift Syndicate.
Keeper: Community Events (lacked the time to contribute, we still love him though!)
Disciple Cain: Talespinner and Lore Wiz Extraordinaire!
Lizsama Artist; totally awesome at drawing stuff (artist behind the Icons for each faction)

Legit Disclaimer: Everything within the lore can STILL be subject to change, even though I said it probably wouldn't. I might be lying out my ass and tomorrow we will have a faction of cakebakers and one of gentlemen with swirly mustaches. But the probability of us changing anything before launch is slim.

Well I kinda replied here because this is the discussion thread.

I can do other things though, too.

  5. Shadow Stealer

If there is interest from others and not just me I'd play. I want to roleplay and have decent people to play this game with. I'm sure it could go well as long as you don't restrict multi clans (as in people in more than one playing, cause I am in that :lolwut:) and that kind of thing. The three factions sound interesting but hope you don't exclude neutral/independent characters. Anyway I'm happy to add my thoughts and stuff if ever you need extra ideas.

  6. Profound Madness

We will have independent and vassal factions so that'll be no problem.

This sounds interesting and I am indeed interested. However, I do take issue with the way you described the SEC as "capitalist fat cats." Today's interpretation of those words do not necessarily follow what would be traditionally capitalistic. Those in the upper echelons of a socialistic economy or even a corrupt communist set up would show the same, and just as horrible behaviors.

X3 Excellent then. To be honest I think a roleplay server will go down really well, I mean who doesn't love roleplay?

Personally I just interpreted that as 'monetary system using' in terms of how the rich get richer and the poor only get poorer. Those kind of big organisations that are motivated only by profit have their own casualties too. Cut throat rivalries and "ambitious" individuals who seek only to get to the top- it certainly adds an interesting angle for roleplay and storytelling. I'm sort of feeling the vibe of Shinra in space from the description. Sorry to Profound Madness if I interpreted that wrong though.

Well, I'd like to join that server. But not as a faction member. You know, just as a small black marketeer and a minor weapons dealer with a relationship with the Nebula Exchange and the SEC, not actually IN a faction... Unless it's my faction. I could already see it: the Parides crew, a shady group of professional mercenries and black market dealers.

People who aren't always in the mood for it? :/ I respect RP/RP servers and encourage this effort - I do RP in non videogame venues - but any number of meta factors involved could prevent me from just being silly and enjoying the game. So I get why it's not for everyone.

  11. Profound Madness

    Profound Madness Big Damn Hero

Well, you are in for a treat. The Nebula Exchange is my faction ;3
RP/RP? .. So basically, you don't roleplay in video games but you like people that do?.. Am I readin' you right? .. Either way, thank you for the support.

...Okay then. I, as the captain of the space vessel Astra Parides, give you my eternal... 25% discount on every piece of weaponry on sale and mercenary services.

  14. Shadow Stealer

    Shadow Stealer Orbital Explorer

Would you allow for multiple roleplay characters in different factions- obviously assuming there was no god modding of anykind?

  15. Kage Tempest

    Kage Tempest Pangalactic Porcupine

When creating two "opposing" factions for something like this where the ecosystem of the server itself depends on the health of activity in these factions, it would be best to make each one appealing in their own way. When you make one sound incredibly unappealing, I doubt many, if any would sign up for that faction.

The criminal organization/pirate organization has appealing qualities for those that just want to do stuff and take things from the other factions, in the name of booty and plunder in that swashbuckling way.

The hippie/conservative (of plants and wildlife) organization seeks to preserve the balance in the galaxy/universe and to make more planets habitable.

Now the third faction, is pretty much painted as rigid and evil where their workers are undoubtedly unhappy unless they are in the administration or possibly security section. What if we changed that third faction to have its own focus or goal in mind? What if it is an organization, funded by a group of high profile corporate investors, that have reason to believe that there are ancient pieces of alien technology hidden away on a few planets, somewhere across the universe? They don't know, or profess not to know publicly what these alient artifacts can do, but they announce publicly that it could be good for all the sentient races of Starbound and who knows, can lead to some sort of new golden age of SCIENCE!!!! and Technological growth for the entire Server.

See? A lot less evil sounding, but does not remove the conflict in the least. Pirates / criminal factions have a reason to hijack and attack the SEC's ships and stations in hopes of finding one of these alient artifacts for their own profit. The hippies would be inclined to protect more or less untouched rich planets from the SEC so it isn't destroyed or possibly damaged in the search for the alien artifacts. Progess, vs the Conservers/clean research vs the pirates/criminal masterminds doing their own thing.

You kidding me? Sure, why the heck not? It will be whitelisted thus only people we trust not to act in a assholish manner will be allowed to play, we trust the masses not to godmode, if they are caught doing such things they will probably be banned for a duration, just sayin'.

  17. Shadow Stealer

    Shadow Stealer Orbital Explorer

Right that's good and I approve of that trust. I've seen people abuse roleplay before and it just ruins the fun for everyone, so glad that'd it be taken seriously :)

The Singularity Extract Corporation is Zephyr's thing, yet I tend to agree with you. The disclaimer is there for a reason. This post was made in a bit of a hurry and thus I might come of as overly casual in my descriptions, some of this was just thought up on the spot. We will probably end up redoing the entire lore segment.
EDIT: I just fixed the SEC Segment, hope you like it. ;3
