Elements in this context are related to Starbound's fire, poison, electric, and ice. For example, take FU's shadow and radioactive elements. How would I add my own?
You'd need to add the new element's inventory icon for weapons that have it. It's under interface/elements. You'd need to patch the elementalTypes.config file in /damage. You'll need to add particles for damage numbers under /particles/damagenumbers. I've added four new elements with this.
