My GIF guides for Animated Signs and Wiring Logic Gates (Well received on Reddit!)

I've made a couple starbound GIF guides that were really well received on the r/starbound subreddit (The animated signs one was even gilded!) so I figured I'd also post them here to see if they can help even more people. I had a lot of fun making them but also put a lot of effort into them so please check them out below!

(Note: the bug at the end has been noticed by Wellbott/Vellbott, the maker of the sign mod, and will be patched in the next[?] update.)

If everyone likes these here as well, I'm open to: 1, suggestions for other GIF guides, and 2, maybe having these become officially recognized by the devs? :)

P.S.: if there's anyone here from the Starbound Wiki or Starbounder (which one is official anyway?), I'd love to know if these could be put on the wiki/if the wiki would be able to support a bunch of fairly large GIFs like are in the guides.

I'm still reading, but it seems really nice!

By the way, do you know if it is possible to create a "delay system" with the wiring tool? Something like this: you press a switch and it opens a door after a few seconds but only once.

This is a good question. Unfortunately, I'm really a novice in wiring and only know enough at this point to explain the gates with any detail. SeaJay's guide on wiring is very extensive, but i don't think he even touches on a delay mechanism. See his basic guide here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/guide-basic-wiring-guide.59852/ and his advanced guide here http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/guide-advanced-wiring-guide.58794/

I knew his basic guide but not the advanced one. Thanks for the link.

I think FloranChef is actually talking about the default starbound wiring mechanics, not the sign mod that's in the game now, so Wellbott may or may not actually know anything about a delay circuit. I understand the confusion though since this thread is on both signs and wiring haha.

Cool guides man, the wiki can absolutely support large gifs for stuff like this. You'll first need to upload them to the site before they can be placed into a guide. Then make a page for the guide using the 'Guide' namespace (eg 'Guide:Logic Wiring Gates') and link it here when it's done.

If you need a hand with wiki formatting give me a shout. Great work!

Nice guide and nice presentation. I appreciate the reference to my guides!

Edit: Someone in Reddit mentioned that the OR gate isn't useless. It is definitely 100% useless in Starbound, you have my word. (Well, you can use it as a delay element, but it's easily replaceable by AND/XOR, so it has no unique functions.) In real life it obviously has a use.

I'll build you something. Give me a few hours. This is a similar problem, it's adaptable but I wouldn't leave you out in the cold by telling you to figure it out yourself. ;)

Yeah, the OR gate is useless because every wiring object's input is an OR gate.

It is a good way to do delays, though XOR could be used too. So to answer the other question, just wire the switch to a bunch of OR or XOR gates in a row then to the door, leaving their second input unused. The signal in the wire is essentially instant regardless of length, so to increase the time of signal propagation you just make a bunch of gates or objects that do nothing, with OR or XOR being easier to with with than an object like a door. This is an inelegant solution but it is easy to understand.

    Indeed!

Here's that delay circuit I promised. It's a pulse extender with one fewer inverter, with a SWS chained on the end. Hit the button to toggle the door. This is a 3-bit example - add more bits for a longer delay, less for shorter.

It might seem a little... nebulous, but if you build it you might see why it works.

YouTube version coming soon! Here it is:

999th edit: Of course, the "naive" solution is to just chain up a bunch of XOR or OR gates in a straight line... but if you want, for example, a 10 second delay, have fun with that ;)

.. You killed your cat. Monster!

I like the design, a binary counter basically.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I had not considered the "naive" solution of just wiring in a straight line... Anyway, SeaJay's solution works perfectly.

Although it's not necessary, I want the outside door in my underwater airlocks delayed, so that it looks like the water pressure is matching the outside.

Just finished formatting my Logic Gate Reference Guide as well!

Since none of the sections in the Guides Project Page were relevant to these topics, I added both of them to a new heading I made called Gameplay and Mechanics. I wasn't quire sure what to do there so feel free to change that however you see fit, Katzeus. Also, I added you on Steam, because reasons. :chucklefish:
