What if the Agarans are just a bunch of cruel, twisted psychos in mushroom costumes? That would explain why they drop hats.

 

Unfortunately, there is of now no Team Fortress 2 mushroom hat, just a mushroom bomb hat.

 

What if agarans are just some cruel joke of some evil, divine beings who control the universe and identify with an orange fish?

 

Gods don't play dice, I'm afraid.

 

Well, they do play with *slightly* weighted dice, which tend to produce certain results under certain circumstances, the results of which, taken together, form a cohesive picture.

It's so legit.

 

Maybe the developers are Agarans and they're trying to tell us.

Given that that is the joke: no, not really.

 

So, given the January update, it's probable that we'll find new things regarding the Agarans.

My quest begins, it seems...

 

Well. Seeing the amount of speculation that's happened. I'd like to put in my two cents.

My Theory: Agaran Bodysnatchers- Body Terraformers

If anyone here is an avid fan of MMOs (don't you dare groan!), you'd know that WoW's next expansion was released last month.
What does this have to do with the AGARAN MENACE?
Well, you see, there's THIS little boss: Archmage Sol: Mage Infected By Spores that appears to have been infected by spores similar to the Agaran's. She does however, seem to try to stop the Player from being infected, showing she's fighting the infection.
So?
What if the Agaran are converting poor, lost souls, like us, into their mushroom-men ranks? And at the first stages of infection, the Agaran are able to coherently make villages and try to warn us about what's happening
BUT..... This doesn't mean Agaran are good guys.
As the infection progresses, the mushroom hivemind/instinct takes over, making them more animalistic and more violent, making them WANT to spread their spores to us.
And, as time passes, the Agaran slowly mutate from G0 (just converted) into G1 (The Basic) into G2 ( The Specialized) G3 (Shocktroopers and Conquerors) into G4 (presumably some form of hyper infectious spore) into G5 (Agaran GODS)

It's only a matter of time before they bring a FungApocalypse upon us. Quarantine them, Nuke them, Preserve them, it doesn't matter. In the end, we're all going to become them.

* A shriek is heard in the background and someone is heard yelling: *

ALSO: It's getting worse. The infection has spread into the mythical dimension known as IRL.
