The name says it all. I want your best Ideas in here. Don't think of it as a Megathread, think of it as a solid brainstorm and reference page to show the interweb what we're made of. So come on, put on your thinking caps and Let's go!

I want to make this clear right now- we don't want specialists. Okay, minor buffs of 1-5% something are okay. Major buffs (if present) must be countered by a debuff. Try to make it so neither is too extreme.

I'll put your ideas up here if the community thinks they're any good. Please post yours below- Azathoth knows I
don't have time to scrape the forums for them all.

    The Mordecii (The Doctor)
2% increased move and attack speed. Increased stamina.

    Space Goblins? (Iffy13)
    +2% move speed. +4% 'engineering'

    Naj-Dref (Reptilian race) (Mr. You)
2% damage resist. 50% poison resist.

    Humans (Eqlles)
    +2% 'engineering.' +2% 'social.'

    Borgish/ Droidkin (Eqlles)
+2% damage resist. +10% Elemental resist. Increased battery.

    Wyverns (Thing)
+2% Move speed. 'Glide' jump extension. Reduced breath

    Hydralions (Liquid Humanoids)
+20% move speed in water, cannot drown. Liquid crouch- reduce to 1x1 flowing water block.

Mustache Pickle People (Pickles with moustaches)
5% chance to confuse enemies on hit. 5% reduced speed debuff for 1 sec when stepping out of water.

  2. The Doctor

    The Doctor Pangalactic Porcupine

Hailing from the planet Mordeca. The Mordecii are humanoid beings who live in subterranean civilizations. Ultrasensative to light, they have near perfect vision even in pitch darkness. They are built with rather wiry muscles so that even with their fast lithe forms they are still incredibly strong. For the most part they are rather anti-social to other species or even other tribes of their own species as there is usually little contact between them.

The Mordecii are skilled hunters and fighters in close combat. Their weapons are often soaked in the venom and have a fanged appearance that both stabs and rends causing intense pain and bleeding if not outright killing their enemy.

Especially proficient with lighter weapons and acrobatic by nature the Mordecii make for great assasins and theives if you can find and befriend them. but watch yourself around them all the same

will edit when i think of more

Actually I was thinking stats and abilities.

  4. Mr.You

    Mr.You Void-Bound Voyager

Race: Lizard-like creature called the Naj-dref
-5% to range and melee base damage taken
(Due to their think scale skin)
    -10% range damage
-25% to damage given via electronic weaponry
10% chance when driving a machine to randomly preform another action.
    (They are bloody LIZARDS!)
+10% base movement speed, -5% fall damage, +5% attack speed and melee damage, immunity to status effects such as poison (but stun, slow, knock back, burning, drowning)
    (Animal like structure and aspect)
"Hunter Scent" 15% movement increase when enemy health is below 20%
"Instinct" +20% melee attack speed, +15% range damage taken, +5% overall damage taken (does stack with range 15%), 10% chance of stunning enemy.

That all I could think of right now. If you have suggestion let me know !

    Space Goblins

I may as well join in :p

Space Goblins have evolved from one core planet, in the centre of the Meridean Sector. They progressed quickly through the stages of evolution, rapidly developing to a structure that suited them the best (fast +2%?) As they progressed, they became very skilled with robotics and advanced technologies ( technical +3% to crafting and electrical weapons) Eventually, their planet became too populated, and most of them left to explore the universe and discover more. Many became settled on space stations and other populated structures and planets (Space Goblin NPCs staring you IN DA FACE!), but many more carried on adventuring. <-- you play as one of these :p
    :D

What's a good game without engineering goblins?

  9. Force2Reckon

    Force2Reckon Phantasmal Quasar

Schmiereman oder Schleiman (Goo or Slime men)
Pros and Cons of being made of slime:
-Large boost in two types of elemental damage taken (25-50%) based on chosen slime type (I.E. Water based slime takes 50% more lightning/electricity damage and 25% more (Ice/Natural?) damage)
    -Minute reduced movement speed (2-5%)
    -Minute damage reduction (2-5%)
-25% reduced elemental damage based on chosen slime type (I.E. Water based slime takes 25% less water damage)
-Spring jump ability to boost jump height
-small reduced fall damage (10-15%) (bouncy! :D)
-ability to compress down into smaller forms (fit through smaller cracks and holes limited based on equipment)

    Bestias (Animal Humanoid)
Pros andCons of being part bird:
-25% more electric damage taken (idk, I'm still stuck in pokemans! :D)
-2-5% more physical damage taken (frail body)
-Potion effects are reduced by 5-10% or duration reduced by 5-10% (higher metabolism)
    -2-5% faster move rate
-Glide for 2-5 seconds (maybe upgradable/trainable?) (could be used to avoid fall damage... careful about smashing into a cliff face
-Base jump increased by 5-10% (light body :D!)

Pros and Cons of being part Bear:
    -25% more fire damage taken
    -2-5% move speed
    -2-5% jump height
-Potion effects are reduced by 5-10% or duration reduced by 5-10% (higher metabolism)
    -Unarmed damage increased
-Increased carrying capacity (maybe like 3-5 more squares)
    -Increased vision in darkness
    -10-15% damage reduction
-Overall health increased (I.E. if 100hp is base than you get 15-20hp more to start and like 5 hp more than other races every time your health goes up so you have more health overall, dunno how that would work)

Pros and Cons of being part Monkey:
-2-5% more damage taken (frail body)
-Potion effects are reduced by 5-10% or duration reduced by 5-10% (higher metabolism)
-Climb rough surfaces (and trees) and hang from rough ceilings
    -Increased melee reach
    -5-10% increased jump height

I've only really thought of those two races and the three types for the beastmen race, any other ideas are welcome and credit will be given (even if you're character just gives me an entirely unrelated idea or if I revamp some of the stats on your character), also any criticism or ideas on how to balance them would be welcome! I don't usually do races and I like the benefits to slightly outweigh the problems. Unfortunately this usually results in what's known among all gamers as being OP... so yeah :)

Idea I came up with while in the bathroom thinking about other Beastias races. What if we were to be able to pick, upon character creation, 2 or 3 adaptations. Genetic changes our branch of Humans has undergone based on their "Earth" that they colonized. Or you pick elements of your planet that effect your adaptations. The adaptations would provide certain bonuses.

    An example:
My homeworld of "Homeworld name here" is:
A planet with strong gravitational pulls and a mostly aquatic surface.
    (blues are what you choose)
This would give you increased move speed and jump height from the gravity, and longer breaths and faster swim speed. Probably would have negatives with larger benefits. It just seemed to fit with the whole sciency scifiency feel.

i think there may be different planets with different gravities, but its a good touch ;)

    Machdude Orbital Explorer

Indrava (two horned demonlike creatures with raptor legs and longer arms)
    + Elongated melee (longer arms)
    + 4% Jump Height
    +5% Movement Speed
    - 5% Hit Points
    - 2% social
    -5% ranged damage

A race of former slaves, this brutish looking race does not take well to others. Their longer legs and arms were designed to grasp branches and scale mountains, making them a very mobile race. However, their claw like fingers were designed to grasp tightly to things so while they can hold melee weapons with ease, they have difficulty wielding weapons that require dextrous digits.

  12. Rhylok

    Rhylok Aquatic Astronaut

While playable races are neat, I'm not sure they're going to be what this game wants, thematically. The main character is escaping the death of their homeworld. We want them to be something we can relate to, and get into the mindframe of. If we get too xeno, we lose some of the connection that will increase the emotional impact and investment in the game. I love me customization, but I'm not entirely sure it has a place in THIS project. Thoughts?

  13. Force2Reckon

    Force2Reckon Phantasmal Quasar

I had the same.... general thoughtline, that's why I had the other idea, basically allowing you to choose features of your homeworld that affected the development of Humans on it, you're still Human, but you can have those cool features, although I doubt we'll get anythin like that, they had their own idea as to what character creation would entail before they released to us the knowledge that the game even existed.

    Trust me :p

  14. Machdude

    Machdude Orbital Explorer

Most people expect diversity and differing gameplay for races, that's why. By introducing a multi-race style of game, you really open the floodgate for a lot of wishful thinking.

However, their homeworld is a planet. They never said it was necessarily earth nor did they say that there was only one race living on it.

  17. Kilo

    Kilo Pangalactic Porcupine

The Wyverns: +5% to move speed, Jump height, and ranged weaponry, as well as a mild gliding capability.
    Average health and defense
-10% to melee weaponry and faster drowning rate, as well as the inability to effectively swim.
The Wyverns are a race of extremely adaptive and agile animaloid creatures renowned for their agility, creativity, and intelligence. Wyverns, despite having a name that refers to a dragon-like creature, are not reptilian, instead getting the moniker from their capabilities. Wyverns are predominantly taller than most other races, with long tails and an extended snout-like face. They do not have wings, however they have a retractable membrane that goes from their sides to their arms allowing them to glide through the air for short distances. Their skin can vary in colors and designs, with splits and different shades and colors. Their eyes are known for being somewhat luminescent as well. Wyverns however, by most facts, cannot swim very well without help, and have general trouble in aquatic environments. They are very inquisitive and scientific, and are very good with machinery and technology.

  18. Lasercat77

    Lasercat77 Pangalactic Porcupine

Hydralions, humanoid creatures composed entirely of water. They can solidify into ice on colder planets for more defense and evaporate into cloud of vapor on hotter planets for higher jump height and slower falling.

    Pros and Cons

10% more damage from poison and electricity in water form
Ice form is slippery and reverts to water form when hit by fire
Vapor form is susceptible to wind and reverts to water form if hit by ice
Swiftly move through water and can't drown
Lose humanoid form and flow through water pipes/small holes
Vapor form's wind susceptibility can be used for transportation
Ice form can slide through long narrow horizontal gaps

Would probably make a fun playthrough

    Dynafols Black Hole Surfer

In all honesty, I believe the best course of action would be instead of a select bundle of races to pick from, we make our own from the beginning (skin tone, eyes, ears, mouth, height, weight, etc) , well as make up the name of our "race". However, I don't think we should have any special "stats" because of our race, that could create some unbalanced situations. In Terraria, we didn't have any levels or races, it was completely based upon your gear, which is something that you "earn" and is something that everyone has the capability of obtaining. (Not saying that levels wouldn't be a bad thing). I prefer it better when I can go out into the world and not worry if I picked "the best race" or having to create multiple characters to give me a slight advantange in certain places.

    ...

But if there must be races with stats, then here.
    Mustache Pickle People
    Pros: 25% Confusion.
    Cons: 10% Mold.
