OSX Mavericks Crash

    Hi guys, I've been having a startup crash issue that I haven't seen reported yet, so here it goes:

    The game worked on two machines running OSX 10.9 (13A603) for about 5 hours. Then, seemingly randomly, stopped even starting on both at the same time. As I click "play" from Steam, I see the application bar change to "starbound" but it just goes away and the process dies.

    So I'm not sure if I'm the only one on Mavericks having this problem? But the strange thing is that it *was* working...

    I've reinstalled the game on one of the machines but it didn't help. I even tried rebooting (ruining my awesome 108 day uptime :p ).

    I have exactly the same problem. Played a bit, exited the game, can't get it to start again. "starbound" app bar flashes for a brief second and then the process dies. Tried re-validating local content, tried re-downloading, got nothing. I'm on Mavericks, Macbook Air mid 2012.

    Having exactly the same issue (game worked, now it doesn't boot) on Mavericks. Game starts and then closes itself, in my case with no error message.

    I've no idea where to locate the log though.

    The file is ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/starbound.log.

    ~/Library folder is hidden and cannot be accessed via Finder by usual means. Open your Terminal app (go to Spotlight and type "terminal" to find it), type open ~/Library, and a new Finder window with that folder will appear. Then navigate it as usual and open the log file with TextEdit or other text editor.

    Sorry, I'm aware of the Library thing (slightly daft move by Apple). I'm not clear on where the log files would be stored. Is this something I can access by browsing local files from within Steam?

    Huh. It seems I may have found a solution. Rename (or remove) your player folder. It will make your current player files unavailable, but at least the game will start.

    OK. Update from last night did not fix the issue. Deleting the player folder worked for me (the game loads at least). It would seem that:

    Error: Fatal Exception Caught: UuidException: Size mismatch in reading Uuid from ByteArray: 4 vs 16

    is the culprit and is related to the player folder or player files in some way (I had trashed all files within the player folder to get rid of previously created junk characters before the crash started happening). But I'm not an expert in QA, and I'm guessing here.

    I completely deleted all files from the Steam folder, to get a proper fresh install.
    That seemed to fix the issue, even though I didn't mod any files .-.

    backup player files and delete them AND universe folder, launch the game, create a new char and start a game, exit, put your old char files back and launch.

    Worth mentioning I was working with a completely fresh install of Starbound. Will try xackoff's fix if/when issue reoccurs (I'm working on the assumption that Mavericks throws a fit after one of the files is created during play).

    This fixed it for me, thank you very much good Sir because I've spent the last day trying to mess around with the config files, restarts, reinstalling the game and nothing worked until now.

    Xack seems to suggest that you can save the player files and put them back once you have a game that will launch. I haven't had time to try it yet.

    So I've figured out a fix that worked for me and let me keep my characters.

    Delete the ".DS_Store" file in the player folder. Its a hidden file.

    Steam: "/Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/player/"

    My assumption is that Starbound tried to load the .DS_Store file and freaks out because it didnt expect it there. (OSX generates these files for its own use) Removing that file and loading again, I can see all my characters. Hope this helps you guys :)

    UPDATE:

    Or just delete all of them in the starbound folder.

    Starbound has been working for me all evening now, looks like deleting the player folder fixed the issue. Will update if it breaks for me again.

    I was having the exact same problem. Deleting the player folder did work and re-adding my characters after creating and starting a new character did not make the problem return. I seem to be running fine now. Thanks guys!
