In Steam, ctrl+click (right click) on Starbound, select Properties.

Select Local Files tab in the Properties window.

    Select 'Browse Local Files'

You should now see the 'player' folder - in my case I just trashed it and started a fresh character, given the high chance for character wipes in the beta.

Hey man, i just got the beta today and havent been able to start the game at all. Because of this I dont have a player file at all, though I am still unable to start the game. Any suggestions? I can't delete the player file to begin the beta

If you aren't using a version higher than 10.8 it won't run at all currently.

Backwards compatibility with older Mac OS version will probably be something that happens further down the road (if at all).

THERE IS A BETTER SOLUTION THAN DELETING YOUR CHARACTER

So don't recommend them to delete their characters @sketchseven
@devs @Tiy you should ignore the "desktop service store" or ".DS_Store", don't know why Starbound wants to read this file.

    Update
Ok, deleting .DS_Store files did the trick. I'd the folder opened in Finder so they were created again. Just close all Finder windows which are located near Starbound and delete those .DS_Store files. Worked!

    Original

So, I synced my save files "player" and "universe" folder with Dropbox on my Mac (10.8) and PC (Win7 64bit). Haven't had any problems yet. But when I try to start Starbound on my Mac now I get an Exception:

When deleting the "player" and "universe" folder Starbound will launch, otherwise it just crashes. Any hints on not throwing away my character?

I found a potential issue with this fix:
I was told to delete the .ds_store file in the player folder and I did so. Problem is, though, OS X recreated the file almost immediately, rendering this particular method useless for me.

You have to do this via Terminal. As soon as the directory is visible in Finder it re-creates the .DS_Store files.

Yes BobTheRob is correct. I should have specified that I do it via the terminal. I've updated and quoted you in my original post.

Thanks, that really helped. However, the command you provided apparently wasn't specific enough for my system, so I had to route the command directly to the Starbound folder.

Just figured I'd put that out there in case others had a similar road block.

    Thanks again!

    Well, this thread is complete

Now, you could always try using a PC if that nothing works

    MIDImadness10 Yeah, You!

I tried removing the DS_Store file and it indeed worked! The only problem is that Starbound still crashes, so there must be something else. I dont want to try deleting my character, because i'd hate to redo the entire game.
