Heya everyone, I decided I'd make a thread to show off my builds as well as mods I'm working on.

I have a ton of stuff from Enraged Koala I need to go back and take screenshots of but for now here's a pic from what I've been working on in Upbeat Giraffe:
    2015-02-02_00002.jpg
This was done underground! I created "sky panels" which emulate the sky. I'm looking into improving it, making the sprites brighter, adding objects for clouds and parallax, and a lot of other stuff.

I'm also working on an underwater base too so I'll try to post screenshots later. :)

Interested. Sky and cloud blocks would be very interesting for my research on new creatures. If you made a mod for that I take it. :3

  3. Jerln

    Jerln Oxygen Tank

Wait, is the background a bunch of custom signs? That's awesome!

  4. Markelius

No. They're custom sky coloured blocks that glow a little I added in. I plan to add Pseudo Parallax, sun lamps, and other things too.

So yesterday I booted up my Enraged Koala build of Starbound, and took a bunch of pics of the builds myself and others on the server my partner & I host have done in the months we played.

This is Beta Marfak Majoris, a pretty uninhabitable planet, that I decided to do some large scale construction on:

    Can you guess where?
    starbound 2015-02-03 16-48-43.png
    That's right, underground.

    starbound 2015-02-03 16-49-44.png
The surface building leads to a core shaft which leads to well, the core. And the core, it's completely drained out.
    starbound 2015-02-03 16-51-26.png
    starbound 2015-02-03 16-52-55.png
I had these little rest stops and populated the place with Avian Pirates. The place was designed to be a safe-haven for outlaws, Avians running from the Stargazers, USCM deserters, Floran Scientists, all kinds of stuff. However I only got as far as building the rest stops, we stopped playing before I made any more real progress.

On the other hand, our main base on Beta Marfak East 101 V was one of the liveliest places over the course of our Koala Server.

The Lower Levels were reserved for stuff like our crafting room & rec room, the armory, a kitchen, an underground farm, and above, we had apartments for ourselves and everyone else on the server, mine's the Avian styled one, my partner's is the high-tech looking one.
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-02-57.png
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-04-29.png
Past the farm though, I had a secret entry tunnel.

Which exited out a small lake.
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-06-33.png
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-06-47.png
And on the surface was the entry to the middle stairwell of our base.
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-07-09.png

But that's not what I'm most proud of...

    Yep..
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-09-12.png
A fully functioning space elevator! And it connected to this.

    But that's not even all!
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-12-08.png
Back at the base, a tunnel on the right side connects to the space elevator, but it doesn't just go up, it also goes down...

The shaft had entryways to countless caves as it went down.

Along the way, it reached this underground tarpit biome, and there we found something interesting.

A buried Avian Chamber! Right beneath our home! There was another nearby too, but we never built a proper looking path to it, so I didn't take screenshots.
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-14-25.png
And Finally, back to the mining shaft...

Just Above the core, I built an Arboretum. I designed it as a controlled environment where the scientists working down near the core could go to relax, but also to study the various species of trees that I planted.

But that's not where I stopped, what? What did you think the scientists I mentioned were doing down there anyways?

This was my core station. Several meters of protective metal shielded it from the magma of the planet's mantle-core transition zone. It was equipped for research, living, it was stocked with food, and had a massive spaceship-grade generator filter liquid nitrogen coolant through the facility.
Not only was it a feat of engineering, it served as a monitoring station for the geological activity on the planet. If an earthquake was going to happen, if there was instability, anything geological, was monitored with impeccable detail. Due to the core station, our base was one of the safest in the galaxy.
    starbound 2015-02-03 17-18-06.png

That's all, as a bonus, here's my ship I built with Madtulip's ship mod:
    starbound 2015-02-03 16-45-24.png
    starbound 2015-02-03 16-45-38.png
Looked a little funny when jumping between planets and systems but the design suited me well.

Of course I couldn't have done any of this without the help of my partner, who runs the server we play on, and all the fantastic talented modders like Madtulip, RaTmAnPL, Boogy, PenguinToast, Storm_UK, and many others who's mods we included in the modpack.

Today, I've been building the modpack we use back up, waiting for authors to update their mods for Upbeat Giraffe, and updating some myself. Honestly, Giraffe is missing a lot of the planet variation and such that Koala had, but overall I'm enjoying the changes quite a bit. I only wish Chucklefish would patch the multiplayer so I didn't crash on every planet I go to, otherwise, I'd have much more progress on that new deepsea base I started building...

So, Giraffe's been playing more stable for me the past week, and I've been hard at work on my new base. It's on a max size ocean world. I'll have some more screenshots tommorow, the server's down for the night.

For now, here's a screenshot of the Entrance Grand Chamber, where the main city will be built. This is underground.
    2015-02-18_00001.jpg
Using my custom sky panel blocks, I made a false sky, which provides about as much light as light-at-noon on a planet. I also have little speakers that play the exact environment sounds played on planets.

The thing I'm most satisfied about this, is with help, I hollowed out a vast portion of the planet, the height of an entire underground layer. It's roughly 170 blocks high, and about 1150 blocks wide. From this I can build an entire city. The screenshot I posted is only the beginning.

couldn't help but read the word "elevator", how does this work?

See the right shaft on my latest screenshot? All those little connected arrow things are called Force Nodes, from the mod Force Gates. They can be wired to inputs and push entities like players, projectiles, monsters, etc. in the direction the arrows are pointing. So when you press that button at the bottom, you're sent up the shaft.

The shaft for going down is pretty simple, it's just a door wired to a button, and when you fall, the pit of water catches you.

As you can see in my big post, they can be used pretty extensively to cover vast vertical distances. I made one that went to the surface of a large planet up to space (which by the way, was a really long way! I had to use building printers from madtulips ship mod to make that space elevator possible).

oh, ok so it's a mod, good to know, still not ready to explode my game with all the epic mods i've seen so far, but when i am, i'll be sure to add that one :p

Ok, I have finished the submersible bays and taken screenshots of the rest of my base.

This is the beamdown point on Beta Mothallah 8541 V, in the same mod I'm working on that has the sky panels, I added "Invisi-Panels". These behave like clear glass in various minecraft mods. They have a hard black border and are completely clear, good for keeping critters out without having an intrusive looking glass dome. They can also be painted.

The remote teleporter my character is standing on lets you beam to your ship, the outpost, or back to your home planet (if you're not me). The button on the left opens the door sending you down the *down shaft* wheras the platform on the right prevents you from falling down the *up shaft*. That contraption next to it is a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) Mapper, so I can have a map of my base.

    2015-02-21_00002.jpg
The Elevator goes through the island and the ocean, leading you to the base on the Ocean Floor.
    2015-02-21_00003.jpg
The down shaft leads to this water chamber which negates fall damage. I wish there was a more compact way to negate fall damage without techs but I haven't found any so far.

    2015-02-21_00004.jpg
There's not much down here yet, just some temporary storage and crafting, and my submersible bays.

    2015-02-21_00005.jpg
This is one of my submersible bays. I want to have some sort of drain system that drains out the water from the chamber, but there's no door that's 12 blocks wide I know of and I haven't come up with any other ways to block the water from draining in, so I haven't been able to do it yet. For now you just enter/exit through the vertical airlock and deploy your submersible tech when you get in there.

    2015-02-21_00007.jpg
Here's the wiring for the airlock, force gates push you up/slow your descent, there's also a wired system in the bottom room which won't let you open the door until all the water drains out. Of course, I have drains placed on the walls in the other two chambers, so water doesn't usually even get that far, but it's still an effective way of keeping the base from flooding.
    2015-02-21_00008.jpg
This is the wiring on the enterance area, btw. I have a little down lift to get to the next part of the down shaft, it can be used to safely go both up and down, all in the same tube. Systems like this are pretty limited to small spaces though, I wouldn't be able to design my larger elevator like this feasibly.

    2015-02-21_00009.jpg
Going down the next down shaft, we see the ceiling of the grand chamber (open to suggestions for a name!). This chamber is big enough to click to the ceiling of with a grappling hook, repel as far as you can, and not hit the ground.

    2015-02-21_00011.jpg
At the bottom of this is the nice grassy entrance area I showed earlier. I haven't gotten much further than this yet, mostly been working on mods, which leaves me less time to play the game.

At any rate, I have big plans for this place, and I imagine as it and my mods develop, it will become much more impressive. :)
