    Bonzai Planet 3000
    Most recent update/edit -25/07/13-

To put it sweet and short: Its your own customizable, explorable, destroyable, deployable, portable, adorable bonsai planet.

When using the nav computer's random coordinates you would rarely appear at a desolate location.
Upon first glance their appears to be nothing as you look out your window, but then as the computer scans the area it picks up a strange magnetic phenomenon. This odd, barren sphere rock comes into view. it is a miniature planet.

The bonsai planet 3000, comes with its own natural atmosphere, biomes, core, you name a basic principle planets have, it has it, and this one appears to have been abandoned by it's previous owner perhaps? or maybe it's a forgotten relic of an ancient race? who knows but you snag this little treasure (with some sort of grav beam or some sci-fi hook and tie it to your ship's trailer hitch), goodness knows it's way too expensive for your checkbook.

While you drag it along outside you speculate on where to find a proper bonsai mount back at the station... After having done that, then the real fun begins... you go on a long, trivial, "it sounded so much simpler" side quest for the planet's bonsai box, with the usual death, killing, destruction and swag.

You get to have your own little piece of planet-like furnishing. the bonsai box comes with its own built in "Mini-you-explorer-droid-5152"(or MYED), which is basically a mini android of yourself on the planet that lets you build, edit, destroy, explore and virtually whatever you can usually do on a planet. Not to mention the functions built in the box, which lets you do various things to the planet like adjusting its settings and properties, placing biomes of your choice and terraforming however you like, a biology and nano droid factory function that lets you put whatever creatures or robots you want on it, including various boss types.
and the endless fun of growing your own personal bonsai tree, on your bonsai planet, in your giant tree house, INSIDE OF YOUR BONSAI PLANET. and so forth.
Did i mention, you can put stuff in orbit around your bonsai planet! like in a chest styled manor, So you can put all sorts of nick nads in orbit around your mini planet!

All these awesome features are yours with the bonsai planet 3000. once you unlock them, i mean you did get the bonsai box for your bonsai planet in a bonsai junkyard, all the functions are damaged and/or depleted, so you'll have to craft the parts to fix it, and gather your own resources to refill it. At least the MYED function came with it, and re-spawns! Some features might need special government teir top secret quests to get a hold of though(aka more side quests, these can be activated by the box though thank the maker). now, go forth, and create your own miniature world!!!!!! OF BONSAINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    "Normal" styled description

So basically my idea with this, is a miniature planet you can have sitting on it's box.
You will be able to customize it in almost any way you want, and working with it will be based off of resources that the device has. Not only will you be able to edit the terrain, biomes and structures to your every whim. You will also be able to edit the properties of the planet, what things spawn on the planet, and make factories of various kinds.

Being introduced to the Bonsai planet 3000

You'll encounter a floating mini planet, which are supposedly excessively expensive to buy, and drag it back to the station where one of the crew members will be a supposed bonsai planet expert and tell you a basic lowdown on what you need to know. Then you'll be given a side quest to find a bonsai box for your bonsai planet. Once retrieved you will be able to toy with it how you please, assuming the functions are unlocked.

    Descriptions of Potential Function-
This is in a tab to make scrolling to the Thread below faster.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Mini-you-explorer-droid-5152 (MYED)

One of the functions of the bonsai planet's box is that you'll be able to control a "Mini-you-explorer-droid-5152", to do what you usually do on planets, but, you know, on a mini planet. It will look exactly like the player (maybe have a little antenna out of its back for "the lols"), and as usual it will take damage, and then re-spawn after being destroyed, as usual. To enter this mode it uses similar mechanics as the beam entry, but with different animations obviously. Accessible from the Box's console

    Properties mode

You wont be able to edit the planets biomes, properties or features on the fly (unless using a on planet device that usually allows it). So you'll need to be out, and using the bonsai box's console. which brings up a menu similar to an options menu, which lets you access all the functions.

some of these functions you will be able to do in properties mode is adjust the features of the planet, like temperature, gravity, atmosphere (all of which effect its other functions, like gravity affecting orbit storage).
From this menu you will also have access to the biome placer, which brings up a similar GUI as "Terrain Modifier", and allows you to adjust biomes and terrain. However this could have dangerous effects on what is there already.

The properties console/properties menu is basically your hub for interacting with your bonsai planet.

    Unlocking functions

After finding the bonsai planet, upon returning to your station, you are given a quest to find a Bonsai box, and the one you find works, but is missing a portion of its basic functions and resources. You can repair/replenished these by either gathering, crafting or side quests given by the bonsai box (like- you try to access a feature and it tells you to do this or that to get said feature working). The functions that do not work could vary, but are either in grouped sets like "Basic" "Advanced" and "Deluxe" or you only have the MYED from the start.

    Spawning

However for the larger, more large scaled work with functions, mostly things like spawning biomes and structures i imagine a GUI with a 2D model of the planet. Similar fashioned to the way the game Reus looks here, but with different menus according to what you have as available functions, and various recourse meters/bars.

    Orbit storage

Further more, you can use it as a chest of sorts, without going onto it. It is a miniature planet, so obviously it has it's own gravity field. so you could potentially use it to store items in orbit around it. Maybe have hilarious instances of a toy ship or Toy animal orbiting your bonsai planet.(warning-user is liable for any damage caused by re-entrt)

    Built in Bio-Nano Factory

The bonsai planet's bonsai box, will contain various spawning features. No doubt one of the more interesting ones would be the bio and nano factories. These will allow you to spawn various mobs and bosses to your hearts content, if you have the resources. This would adjust what would spawn on the planet, and allow you to have bosses put in certain locations.

    Terrain Modifier

Utilizing the Large scale UI, you will be able to modify the Terrain to various selections, like biomes or natural structures. The same function could be used to spawn artificially made structures, or hurl various objects towards the planet like ships or meteorites.

When placing a certain terrain or biome, you will be required to give a certain amount of resources, which the bonsai box will then convert into the desired selection. These biomes or terrains can come in default packs, or the player can make their own custom terrains. Simply changing the used material completely or completely altering the shape and size of the terrain type.

Possible customized terrain and structure spawn
as an additional customize capability with placing terrain and structures, thing like mountains, hills, caverns, houses or dungeons would have adjustable properties, allowing you to set what the size would be and which materials the placed selection would be using, allowing anything from metal to lava or water. this could lead to some cool buildings made of crystal, or amusing water or lava based temples, or a dungeon souly made of dirt.

    Placeable Item

The bonsai planet 3000 will be a Placeable and movable item, thus being able to place it anywhere you would want to.
Which could lead to some amusing loops and inceptions, assuming their are no conflicts, or "glitches"<-hyphens are there to imply some could be intentional or mechanics. After putting a tardis, in a tardis over and over, wont end well...
Basically it can be placed, and maybe be almost anywhere.

    Item appearance

Bonsai planet 3000's appearance would change according to which changes the player makes to it.
This means the terrain you change with the plannet, would be reflected on the planets appearance as a placed item. Stuff you'd be able to see would be things like Biomes and Landscape on the planet, however if on a massive scale, Things like structers could potentially be seen, but these would need to be massive.

The texture of the planet along the front side, would most likely change based on what you have placed on the surface of the planet, basing itself off of what terrain there is.
    OR
It would appear as an ant farm like appearance, showing you everything from the surface to its core.

    Custom/varied bonsai box

so you have this box below your bonsai planet which is used to contain and hold it. this box could have various appearances. of which could either be influenced by the player's choice, or could be randomly generated when given the bonsai tree.

    Reset

The planet will reset itself collecting all the resources into it's storage again, and hurling non-storage-able items into it's orbit. Making it barren once more. It could do like a spinney thing or something to achieve this.

    Releasing

You've had your bonsai tree for a good few years now, you've grown fond of your pet bonsai planet, had your fun times and memories, but you're getting old, and you don't want to hold it back from its true purpose as a planet, you look your your window coffee at hand and sigh. Then you take it to the nearest star, take it out, and place it on your hull. you hit the release putting, smiling at it as you watch it drift away. it begins to grow however, returning to it's true size. you whisper to yourself... "Goodbye Bonsai Fido"
In other words you can release it, and it will return to it's original size from before you found it, and you will be presented cords to it, so you can visit it whenever you'd like.

    Item Transfer

With the use of certain resources, you will be able to transfer items from your characters inventory, into the inventory of your MYED. This function could be used to potentially expand the storage function of the planet to a colossal scale. Given enough resources are available.
Or this function could be ignored, and the inventory carried strait to the MYED

    Multiyplayer

On the though of multiplayer, i pondered how it would be effected or effect the bonsai planet and it's functions. to avoid supposed complications it would seem that the planet cannot have its terrains or biomes edited while someone is on the planet itself, as this could result in various issues, mainly lag, in mind.
and toying with the planets basic properties could also lead to being an annoyance in terms of lag or annoying another player while their on a planet.
so their could be two ways to go about with this...
-Only the owner of the planet can adjust the settings, and other players cannot go to the planet without the owner HYED at the same time.
-the planet's properties and the bonsai box's planet editing functions cannot be accessed if a HYED is in use.
-this could potentially not be a problem and thus completely ignored.

Sarzael mentioned pvp, and on that topic, the bonsai planet 3000 could definitely be used as an interesting arena, and perhaps have some custom functions related to pvp.

    Balancing

Recourse generation on the Bonsai planet 3000
    Brought up by Sashraan
Generating resource on the planet could lead to overpowering and abusive game breaking situations where major resources could be yielded.
However, this can be balanced in various ways,
To prevent the player from abusing the planets limiteless potential, the world would need to transfer resources to the player, however this could cost resources thus the actual gain from using the planet to make resources would be significant smaller. This could use the same mechanic as item Item transfer.
To avoid everything having a drastic cost however, basic resources could potentially be broken down to be used on the planet directly, reducing cost of bringing it to the planet. and vice-versa with same basic resources. similar to changing from Kilos to grams and back to Kilos.

The cost of placing facilities could be more then normal items, due to their purpose aswell as the fact that they involve more complicated and delicate components, and there for would requite more recourses to transfer between inventories.

    Avoiding Material Farming
Odds are while placing new biomes that players might get the idea of using a farm biome, place biome, farm biome cycle to gain extra resources.

However this would not serve them much good as the resources they would be getting out of this technique would go almost nowhere.
in order to place biomes you would need to give the machine an adequate amount of resources based on what you make the biome out of, and there for you will not be able to farm resources, as your simply gathering what you used.

    Rewards

Unlocking some of the functions, or using some of the features of the Bonsai planet 3000 could yield rewards for players aside from a potentially massive fun-house. Players could also be given the option to make facilities to generate resources like power, or have massive factories used to make precious minerals. Random //but_intentional// glitches could occur, causing randomly generated items.

    Ingame planet contests

in our world there are bonsai tree contests where tree's are judged based on their appearance and maintenance.
so why not do the same for the bonsai planet? there could be ingame contests (with NPC's or other Players) that allowed judging of your own bonsai planet.
and their could be various prizes to winning this contest too perhaps?

    Not-so-bonsai-bonsai-planet-boss

After releasing your bonsai planet, it could develop a Terrain based boss of large proportions, which would be unique to worlds generated from bonsai planets.
These bosses could scale in difficulty, posses different appearances and have various behavior cycles based on what materials and biomes it is made of.

Thoughts on system use and compatibility

one of the main focuses i had with this idea was that it would be a smooth and compatible, relying on most of the factors of the in-game that there already are. rather then re-hauling various systems and mechanics the bonsai planet would instead let the player custom edit these aspects through the menu for the planet.
and i didn't expect any heavy system weight from a simple mechanic or most of the functions.
however, functions like the releasing the planet, or the changing texture of the placed item, some of the custom made buildings or placing certain terrains... i could see as being a issue in memory weight, mostly because of the large data being transferred and the more complicated texture mechanics.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To sum it up in shorter words-
    --Random find
    --Side quests
    --Resources
    --Almost completely customizable
    --Able to alter mob spawns
--Able to spawn terrain and structures
    --Place-able
    --Reset-able
    --Releasable
    --Item transfer OR Inventory carryover
    --Potential Rewards and more!

Their could be various other uses, aspects, functions or requirements for the bonsai planet 3000.
but this is what i have so far, what do you think?

This idea is something that sounds like so much fun!
A lot of balancing should be done for it not to turn into an 'infinite resource bonsai', having the planet turn into just a clusterpluck of generators/factories/energy generators/etc.

I'd have tons of fun though, I think I'd spend TOO much time on it.
Just having fun on your planet, putting houses and pets and what-not on it.

Kind of being the almighty ruler of said planet, due to your size compared to it (when bonsai-sized, of course).

All in all, I'd approve this idea were I a dev, but some tweaking needs to be done, to make sure it wouldn't just be a cheat-ball to get any and all resources rather than a world-bonsai to have a dreamland and fun little place to inhabit during spare time in-between missions, hehe.

    +1 to this, deffinitely!

Well in terms of recourse generating, here are a few of my thoughts on balancing some stuff out-

My original intent was that it would require a large sum of resources, much more than usual, because transferring complicated parts could take a lot of time and materials, as well as power to reconstruct on a much, much smaller scale. Thus I imagined that the item transfer function would way heavily here, as it would cost an abundance of resources to generate resources. so instead of effectively working as a effective generator, it becomes more of a convertor.

or the concept of "glitches" occurring with the bonsai's programming(as in intentional glitches) could help balance it, like cause the resources generated to be like a certain % corrupted, so you don't get as much resources out of it as you usually would.

or you know, you could kinda just, pick the basic resources off the planet, and get mini-resources that can be crafted into normal resources and vice-versa
though i thought having an item transferring function would seem more techy, especially since basic resources and a high tech super computer have different properties,

or maybe you have to pay a bonsai fairy a toll for shipping the goods through a wormhole.

but i wasn't sure what to go with or what would be the best solution, as i am sure they could be abused too in some ways, and i am curious as to what other possible solutions there are to balancing this.

I love it! My planet will be full of carnivorous plants. Mini carnivorous plants. And i will throw ants and other insects at it.

Also, who voted down probably didnt read the idea at all...

Just a question though, if you do a big modify on the planet, would it affect the way you view it from outside? That would be cool.

Also, the Miniyou should be a exact replica, including items, but you will not be able to loot stuff. Training Arena!

  6. Shade215

    Shade215 Big Damn Hero

I figured its appearance as a placed object didn't need to be said, because that's something that usually is done with most customizable items,
but yes its appearance would change according to what you do with it, and you would even, if lucky/big enough be able to see some of the things you build.
like a massive cluster of dungeons or structures, maybe some mountains and lakes,
and the texture of the planet along the front would most likely change based on what you have placed on the surface of the rest
//or it could be styled similar to a disc like world, being able to look at the inside like an ant farm.

i'll be adding this information, along with the balancing information to the original post -//for convenience of reading it mostly all the info in the first post//-

The good of this planet is that it isnt necessarily just for decoration. It can be your own mini PVP Arena, your testing ground on where you test weapons agaisnt different bosses and monsters, etc etc etc.
Also, it would be cool if you could add moons and customize them too.
Also, you shouldnt be able to see your character face.

  9. Shade215

    Shade215 Big Damn Hero

of course not just for decorations, and those things are just what i had in mind,
you'll be able to place whatever you want in terms of mob spawners -within game perimeters of mob limits of course-
this includes bosses and Bot-players for you to fight -customizable in difficulty maybe?-
the sole purpose of the mob spawn function was to allow you to virtually messing around with whatever you want in whatever way you want.
without abusing it for farming of course.

moons, well i thought about it but I'm pretty sure that this would be difficult for the bonsai planet to do.
because almost all the time moons are a massive distance from planets, and the bigger gravitational force in this instance is definitely the ship itself.
so, the moon would drop. and lets say the moon is closer to it. then the moon would have too much mass, and would begin to drift towards the planet and collide.
make big half-of-the-mini-planet-sized-hole in small pricy bonsai planet, not good idea.
that and imagine the laaaag and filesize if you had that many adjustable textures.
although yea it would be a pretty cool thing to toy around with for sure.
