Haha, I actually love it how old SMAC factions were pretty much unique only in terms of their main accent, such as diplomacy, science, militarism or commerce, yet devs managed to to make each faction so charismatic trough the leaders. You know, Morgan is always like "hey kids who wants sum new products?! Gib moni now!" and Zakharov is like "I bet you plebs don't even know what science is like!" and. um... yeah, I got carried away a bit! In any case, I just find the character design in SMAC damn awesome, expansion factions like Data Angels and Nautilus Pirates included!

Also, I dunno what's your problem with survivalist Spartans, I mean, heck, they're on a human-unfriendly deathworld with more limited than planned resources, I'm pretty sure population control and eugenics are pretty justified in such, heh, spartan conditions.
