What are your favourite Sci-fi melee weapons?

I know this sounds corny and someone may have said this but lightsabers
I like them cuz they are light and have good damage. Anything with those aspects I'll use

The Gunslashes from Phantasy Star Online 2

They're hybrid one-handed swords with guns. They can shoot at long range, and can be used to slash at short range. Here is a pic of one of the gunslashes of the game:

(Gunslashes are not the same as the Gunblades of Final Fantasy VIII - the Gunblades can't shoot at long range, they're just melee weapons)

nice but that explosion would kill you oh well I'd want it more organic in the boom like a flood carrier form/creeper explosion times 5...

STICK
the weapon is simple
just bonk your enemies over the head with it.
you can even attach a stone to the end to make it a club!

you may be thinking how is this a sci-fi weapon?

the user of the punched was not harmed, I was talking about I high risk weapon that makes you have to run after punching someone to avoid getting caught in the explosion you just triggered...

 

what about a steam powered sword?

 

if i recall correctly swords are manpowered not steam powered.
how would that work exactly?

 

Something pointy, lasery, and.... killy.

I recommend your standard issue laser swords, knives, axes, etc. However, some of these weapons should have randomly generated effects.
Shoots laser bolt: Sometimes, when swung, will emit a bolt of pure energy. (Much like the master sword in Zelda)
Shoots arcs: Under certain circumstances, a large vertical energy wave will come and drive through any enemies which are in the way. (Dynasty Warriors anyone?)
Boomerang effect: Can be thrown and will return to you.
Gunblade: Specified weapon will have small blaster attached to the pommel.
Ballistic weapons: Has the ability to launch the blade/axe head at the enemy. Part must be picked up in order to attack again.
ETC!!!

That's most of what I could think of right now!

I would love to see these in Starbound. I also can't wait for the US version of PSO2.

I mean, laser swords are cool. But they're pretty obvious.

I think a wrist mounted "holographic" weapon would be fantastic.

Now, that's not really a good word for it, but I mean you start swinging your arm and then a blade/flail/hadouken pops out, then it disappears/retracts/smacks Zangief in the face, sort of like how Zer0's sword "digistructs" when he starts swinging the hilt in Borderlands 2.

Real answer - That frigging sword Zeratul uses in Starcraft, because of how hilariously powerful it is. When you can effectively take down the enemy's main HQ building in 8 strikes, you know you're on to something good.

Goofy answer: I say this only because you need to get to pretty much melee range to use it - The Apple of Eden from AC.

Capable of insta kills and flying across the room into enemies is always fun.
