Option A. I like having a guard in front of my hands when I'm swinging weapons at monsters.

Just a general design thought, but what about putting the guiding rail on the scythe blade under the aerogel rather than above it? That way the sharp side of the blade faces upward and the rail faces downward, rather than the edge facing downward and the rail facing upward.

With that design, the scythe could be used as a stabbing weapon like a mattock, or as a slashing polearm like a glaive with a rather extremely curved blade.

The inward-facing edge on scythes was originally for harvesting crops, and since the Avali are predatory, it seems more reasonable that their scythes would be designed for hunting and/or combat rather than harvests.

Having the rail on the inside would block the blade from striking the target though if they are caught inside the swing. The shape of a scythe is to catch and deflect material up into the corner, along the inside of the blade, where it is then severed. I can't see how you could swing a scythe and strike with the outside edge of the blade. Of course the whole idea of scythes as a weapon is pretty silly, but so is the idea of having axes in melee combat at all. Axes in traditional melee combat weapon were improvised weapons usually, or used by cultures that could not afford to make more efficient weapons - however, Starbound insists on having specialised combat axes and so there is a demand for an avali weapon.

Though in retrospect I can see a vibroSCYTHE being quite damaging, since the design of a scythe puts a great deal of pressure at the cutting surface, and vibroblades cut best under consistent pressure, as opposed to heft like a conventional blade, potentially, with enough determination I could foresee such a weapon cutting a humanoid completey in two if hooked at abdominal height

Then they wouldn't be scythes, they'd be spears with different tips. As Ryu says above, scythes aren't stabbing weapons (you don't stabby stabby with a scythe), they're slashing weapons.

    I see how you mean.

I was thinking with a scythe of plain design, where the problem would be that you'd hook the enemy but not be able to cut through entirely. But with a vibroblade, that's not a concern.

Yeah it's improtant remember vibroblades are actually a damage over-time weapon rather than a "burst" damage weapon, to use MMO terminology :p - the longer the cutting edge is pressed against the target, the more damage is inflicted, as opposed to each blow having to be a discreet hit. I could almost imagine if this was an MMO it'd be like a two step chain skill:

First activation: Begin inflicting X per second as long as target remains in range. Cannot block or parry while attacking.
Second activation: Shatter blade for Y damage and inflicting bleeding. Cannot attack for several seconds while blade reforges.

if I had to make a choice, I'd say A seems the most logical way of holding it in game, just with the way the weapon appears to be designed.

in this case wouldn't it be better to build a double edged scythe with a pointed tip? it retains the slashing capacity but with the spear like tip you can ram it into the target and break off the blade for massive trauma

Then it's a type of halberd, which is a polearm with slashing and stabbing capabilities, not a scythe. Scythes by their nature are optimized to slash, stabbing with them would be unwieldy at the best of times, as the blade throws of it's balance.

They use the rail to make sure it remains straight as it prints. Without it, you'd have gravity pulling one end away from the printer and pushing one end toward it as it continues to manufacture the blade material.

Not sure it'd ruin the blade, but it seems probable it wouldn't form as neatly.

The rail is also needed to properly transmit the osccilating action into the blade
