Took care of beta screaming for you.
I would also like admin commands or packet structure/data info, and having authoritative servers would be nice. I know stuff is actively being worked on, just want to let the devs know that this would be VERY helpful to the multiplayer community.

It's not happening this second, it happened some time ago now. We haven't seen it since the person was IP banned.

There are no mods on the server that would cause this (such as a no meteor damage mod). As others have stated, it's easy enough to do if you know what you're doing and you're motivated.

I don't know how else I'll be of help without knowing who is transmitting what packets. And I don't have the spirit to figure it out. Again, I have a picture stating my claims for the people who'd be in charge of fixing this potential issue, should it become more common.

See now you're getting suspiciously evasive.

I asked a simple request that should be pretty easy to do - link me to any server where this is used in an offensive way.

I don't care how easy it is to do. Prove it by showing me a screenshot or linking me to a server under attack.

Now why can't you do that? It's much easier than your JSON-image fantasy.

Dude. People are not going to be able to link you to a server where it is happening because it's not happening all the time. when it does happen measures are taken so that the offender can be stopped (IP banning, password protecting and whitelists and so on.) Either take their word for it that this has happened and that it can be done in the way they are saying or don't but if you have nothing constructive to add to this thread please leave it be.

You forget that the first step to solving a problem is confirming it. This is not something you can "take their word" for because the problem has to be seen and documented in order to be properly fixed. This is why programmers need bug reports so they can replicate the issue and see what is going on.

If this is an issue, yes I agree it needs to be fixed asap, but with no confirmation of it actually happening, you cant expect anyone to dive in with no guidance as to where to even begin to fix the problem. It is literally finding a needle in a haystack, but you have no idea what the needle even looks like. Hell, the needle could look like a straw of hay for all we know.

Give me a million dollars. Its for a good cause, "take my word for it" ... Right...

Now, you want to talk about not having anything to add? You are adding nothing to the topic by actively hindering confirmation of the issue. How about instead working out a way to provide proof rather then telling people to take your word for it? It is a tricky subject matter, yes, but as was requested, a simple mod that replicated the same effect would provide enough proof of concept to begin working on a solution.

The issue was already confirmed by both mollygos and Tiy.

The only further posting in this thread at that point should have been reproductions or further instances of the issue.

If you'd actually go a few pages back you'd see that the screenshot is available. Go get it, have fun looking at goatse, but you'll have your proof.

So yep, I made a tool to transform 24 and 32 bit pngs to such a sprite.
Evidence? Here you go: I took [IMG]
    and took it into starbound[IMG]
The only thing I'll have to fix is the upside-downing.

Edit:Now accepts grayscale, grayscale+alpha, rgb, rgb + alpha pngs

So every kid out there can duplicate it with their own image? It would be irresponsible of anyone to post up files that can be used to exploit serious bugs until the holes can be closed, especially for something that can be used for potentially illegal purposes. Stating the fact that they found the bug and communicating with the devs to get it fixed is the right thing to do, not posting code to exploit it to anyone who asks for it.

Indeed, do not post details on exploits like this or send them to random people that ask. Instead, send those details to Molly so she can get the information to where it needs to go.

Should I send you the source so you can send it to the molly/tiy/any dev? It might seem weird if I send a PM to one saying "Hi! Here's the source of a tool which uses an exploit in Starbound and which could be used for illegal things. Bye!"

    RyuujinZERO Supernova

I doubt it'd be very useful to them. They understand the mechanics of the exploit (The relevant part they need to fix), the tool just creates the relevant array of data for any given image.

You can if you like and I'd be happy to forward it along in the existing PM conversation. I'll PM Molly in either case so that she knows the tool exists at least and she can request if it might prove useful.

That is a fair point. I doubt an actual image -> JSON tool would be of much use to them as they no doubt already know about creating an array of colored dust sprites to draw an arbitrary image. There is a chance it might save them some time by helping set up a test case to try out various countermeasures on.

I'll say that the tool can be misused to cause lagg to graphic cards by using 100x100 sprites (10000 single sprites ingame).

Damn. I have to say I will be a little sad to see this go. I've made a fair bit of custom items myself as seen in my signature and there's so many unique and interesting ideas people come up with using this method as well. I sort of hoped it could be up to a server administrator to properly punish abuse of this but I can understand wanting to stop the possibility of it happening in the first place.

There's always that one guy who has to ruin it for the rest.

  20. Wingfighter

    Wingfighter Guest

This can certainly ruin it for the rest on multiplayer, I played with a guy a while ago, apparently he already had fps lag when I held a 16x16 (256px) sprite, while my PC supports 64x64 (2048px) sprite and it's still fluent, don't forget they can make the user having them lagg even if they're just in his inventory. Some people's are just too old, and that's just another thing how you can annoy others
