Having played with my mod a bit, I thought of a compromise. How about when you place a block in the background it has no rivets, but when it's placed in the foreground, it does.

Personally, I'm finding the rivets to look great on foreground blocks, but they look really odd on backgrounds, because what in the world are they riveted to?

This would be easily possible, because the pipe template uses a different set of tiles for the background corners.

Would this fit your needs or would you still want a duplicate set of blocks without rivets?

Hi all, @simulatoralive your proposed idea sounds great. Though i would be nice to have both. Reasoning is there are time when one would be great for one build and sucks for another. Using the blocks with rivets as a foreground would make it look like I-Beams to some extent or another type of construction material, while the non-rivet would make it look like metal plate (ie metal plating for ships in RL). Thanks again and GL with the mod.

Here's something you'd possibly want to look at:

This is an old Hylotl ship design. :) Mind also making blocks based on it?

I can at least steal the color scheme for a few new blocks. Plating, alternate plating (fins) and trim will be easy. I want to copy that fish scale look somehow for a block, but that does not look like an easy job. I may even be able to make something of the patterns on the hull. Hrm. I could even do another variant of Wall Panel.

I'll probably label them as "Fish Ship Plating", "Fish Fin Plating" and "Fish Ship Trim". If I manage to copy the scales to my satisfaction, then that will be "Fish Scale Plating".

Are there any other old versions of ships about?

I'm not done, mind you, but I find the Fish Scale Plating so beautiful that I had to post a teaser image:

Personally, I absolutely love the look of this block. I could stare at it all day.

Thanks MrChow for the fun challenge you gave me.

Edit: I'm thinking of making the edges more rough, so that blocks underneath will show through. Basically, pulling the edges back to around the scales. The background portion would remain the same.

Well, I did discuss this a few days ago. Got only positive feedback. Did some other things for a while to let people think it over and then went forward with it.

You could have weighed in on the subject sooner, to be honest.

Edit: Looks like I'll be doing that entire extra set of blocks, after all. Seems like too much work for something so small.
