The brain simulates signals from phantom limbs interacting with said objects. If I was in a CAT scan and touched something with a phantom limb, it would make a signal like any other.

Try using your phantom limbs to touch a material you've never touched before and see what happens
Either your brain will guess wrongly what it feels like, or you won't be able to feel the material at all
