It's a Homestuck inside joke... so it wouldn't be very funny if I explained. All I can do for you is to tell you to read Homestuck, haha.

Well it was stated in the lore, though Florans don't have two separate sexes; male and female, they still reproduce, the gifs and comic suggest how that may occur.

 

Which begs the question why chucklefish still decided to add gender choice to the character creator.
Maybe they'll just make it one gender in the final game.
