It does. Wouldn't recommend it, but it does.

 

Think it'd come down to individual ruleset for that.
Spiked chain from 3.5 is first that comes to mind, where it had a reach to it that let you melee up to 10' away, and bonuses to trip and disarm rolls against opponents.
( Also had the special addition of allowing weapon finesse feat so that dex mod could be used instead of str, but not sure if a heavier ball and chain kind of weapon would allow that. )

That was the explanation I got, they insisted it all made sense from a synergistically shifted socioeconomic perspective in terms of the growing globalization of the internet of things market!

Gotta sacrifice a lot of functionality for idle amusement I suppose.
