And yes, Spelunker potions are a good idea, but if you can, use dangersense and hunter potions as well. It helps with avoiding/finding spider caves and the like.

 

Also use quick mining if you haven't been already. (Hit Ctrl to toggle, I think. The cursor changes size and shape slightly when you do.)
Lasers seem like they might be a grey area between those two?

Heh. When mining I also like to use shine, night vision, and sometimes featherfall potions as well. Helps with a lot.

I use mining potion, spelunkers potion, and lava immunity potions.
All with a mining armor set and a Shroomite Digging Claw.
