I love it when I buy a game and then it doesn't work. Best part is listening to my friends talk about how much fun they had, and I couldn't be there.

Hey guys, I made a little fix for the crashes I was getting on XP. I thought I'd upload it in case it helped anyone else:

    https://www.mediafire.com/?m4nqgga4hfnviqn

Obviously running random exes on the net isn't the best of ideas, so for those more paranoid you can use a hex editor and fix it yourself.
The numbers before : are the address, a bunch of identical characters are included because I'm lazy.

    Initial:
    0000 0580: 55 89 E5 57 56 53 83 EC 5C A1 8C D7 C2 00 85 C0
    0000 0970: 60 A7 E1 00 E8 D7 20 50 00 5A 59 58 1C C9 E1 00

    0051 CCD0: 92 89 C6 89 1C 24 E8 15 D7 25 00 89 34 24 E8 6D

    0051 D030: 07 FF FF 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

    Patch those bits to:
    0000 0580: 55 89 E5 57 56 53 83 EC 5C E8 DE 03 00 00 85 C0

    0051 D020: 92 FF 25 58 CA E1 00 50 68 60 A7 E1 00 E8 1E 5C
    0051 D030: FE FF 58 59 59 C3 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

    Enjoy!

EDIT: And I guess I could as well explain what it is that I did. I was getting tons of crashes because of threads concurrently calling setlocale, which is part of the C standard library and very much not thread safe. I wrapped all setlocale calls and gave it its own critical section, which seems to have fixed the issue, at least on my machine.

EDIT2: That patch is for starbound_opengl.exe, NOT starbound.exe, just to clarify. Which means you will need to run the exe directly, instead of using the launcher.

I dunno if a fix like this was posted before but i managed to fix my low fps problem on 2 diferent laptops.

Changing my hybrid laptop graphics to power save mode gave me insane fps on an intel i7 with inte 3000 graphics (radeon 6770m was slow)

Also on my second laptop A10 Quad core + radeon HD8970 i had problems to run the game on full hd zoom 2, but after setting the graphics on power save everything runs great.

Maybe it'll help some of you :)

To everyone saying to wait on the Chucklefish screen, there is a caveat I found. It will literally sit there forever if I don't do something. I found that if I click the mouse on the window a few times, hit escape a few times and hit space a few times, my mouse cursor will change to wait icon, and the game window will go to not responding. This lasts for a minute or two tops, and then the game continues to load.

Edit: Or you know, if I would restart the game/launcher, todays update totally solved the problem for me.

"the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an X86 (32 bit) or X64 (64 bit) version of the program, and then contect the software publisher."

so what exactly is going on with mac users? I have mac 1.6.8, and when I click play, the penguin icon shows up for an instant and immediately disappears afterwards.

I just bought the game an hour ago and had no idea this would happen; is there any official word on plans to fix the game for lower version mac users? And is there anything I can do to work my way around it, besides downloading Mavericks? (I barely know anything about macs, to be honest, and I read something about Mavericks having a small chance of screwing up your files if you download it).

HI Everyone. Using windows XP , I believe since the latest Update/Patch (Dec 6?) the chucklefish logo no longer locks up for me. It does however cause a crash. I looked on other forums and...

THERE IS A FIX for it.

    1. When launching starbound, go into the windows task manager and find the starbound.exe program under Processes.

    2. right click the starbound.exe before it starts and select SET AFFINITY.

    3. Set the CPU Affinity to CPU 0 ONLY.

It seems to work for me but as far as I can tell or read from other forums it may be a hit or miss fix.
I hope this helps and enjoy the Beta!

Special Thanks to all those on the Forum who may have found a fix and the Game Devs for the hard work. Kudos!

Running windows xp and I've tried every work-around for the "violation access" bug and none of them work. Rather disapointed to get the early access of the game just for it to not work on my OS.

For the busted teleport / stranded on ship, if you just keep trying, eventually it will let you down. Once you manage to get down, dig a hole deep enough to make teleporting back up not available. This will make it easier to spam the teleport down button without accidentally teleporting back up once you've made it.

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted it, but in the server window, when trying a failed teleport it says:

Error: World thread has died, removing world alpha: (then numbers here)

If you're having trouble getting past the loading screen and you have the game on Steam, try the option "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE...". Hopefully that'll do the trick.
