Why do we need the distress beacon?

    If we can use coal to power our ship's fuel, then what is the distress beacon good for? So far it's only brought me penguiny death.

    Once you defeat the boss, he drops a ship upgrade which allows you to travel to a new sector with better l00ts and harder enemies.
