The Starbound Music Guide (Updated for Starbound Composer)

So I feel a little silly asking this, but can I take my vast Mabinogi library and port it into this format somehow? It would be nice to have all that ready at hand for when things started.

 

Although I don't think an MML to ABC program exists you can use 3ML to convert MML into Midi and then convert the Midi to ABC. I used 3ML while I played Mabinogi and it's pretty straightforward. If you have trouble finding the right version (the page is in Japanese after all) PM me and I can give you a copy of mine.

 

I do have a copy of 3ML laying around somewhere, and I'll likely try my hand at that. Thanks for the info!

Uses a Triangle or something that sounds Similar to a triangle.
Note that I couldn't get it to remain silent, they will have to start the triangle piece when they feel it is in the right part of the song to start it.
Doesn't Pause Properly, continues making a tone.

The pauses in this piece don't stop making sound, which is unfortunate. Its a small bug, but I have no idea how to fix it myself. This one also starts out immediately, when its not supposed to, you'd have to have a band together that knows when to start each piece.

Doesn't properly pause like any others with a pause in it. Im beginning to think its just a bug in the notations. Luckily the instrument that is used in it doesn't have a long hold, as its a Dulcimer, and fades off properly.
It can be easily switched off with a Bass of some kind, as the tone becomes near silent during the pause.

I don't understand midi, or even bar-and-note music anyway. This will be fun to experiment with.

Can you play more than one note (or in this case letter) at a time (depending on the instrument, of course)?

 

Judging from the videos seen in daily updates it is possible to play more than one note at a time. Hopefully this will apply to all instruments (maybe it does already) in the future.

One concern of mine is whether or not ABC notation supports something the MIDI program that I use calls "Note Velocity", which is just how loud each note is. Does it? Do you think that there will eventually be a way to use it with the game?

 

You can use dynamics in EasyABC to change the velocity of notes.


You have to do this manually BUT it will apply to the entire song after you put it in (just like real music notation). So if you have multiple dynamic markings the next one you use overrides the last. I'm not sure if this will be supported in-game but I'm optimistic it will. If it is then I'll add it to the guide.
