Nope, not bound to your pallet. Was hopeful for a moment that it's color might at least be random, but it kinda looks like a better lit version of the little guy above.

Also, as this little guy just appeared without provocation (this character had no previous pet), I'm assuming your character gets one at the beginning. Has anyone seen if perhaps the color of the pet can be picked at creation?

Addition: Some modded characters DO start with a pet. The Borg from the Trekkers race modpak is apparently based off of the Apex and has their ship and pet. I'm wondering your pet isn't something spawned with the ship rather than the character. Another modded race I've tried didn't get a pet, but also had a non-vanilla ship. Further testing will now commence.

Oh, and no, there doesn't seem to be a way to edit the pet color so far.

 

This is AMAZING! I really hope there will be more pet customization in the future (For example, humans choosing between cat, dog, mouse, etc. at character creation, then choosing the appearance/species)

I'm not the only one disappointed with the pets, am I? Here's my breakdown;

The cat is out of place now. On the Lunar Base, it felt like a pet left behind, like the cat from the Nostromo in Alien. Now it's not so unique.
The pig, being a Glitch pet, should be mechanical. Instead it's a regular pig. A regular EARTH pig.
The snake is cute, but it's just a regular snake with leaves stapled on. Nothing alien at all.
The crab is possibly the most alien of the bunch, but it's too big. Two problems here; any smaller and it wouldn't look good at all, and any bigger and it'd look worse. It just sticks out like a sore thumb.
The weasel, while being cute like the real deal, is out of place. Also not alien at all.
The bunny makes sense with the Avians, but again, it's an EARTH bunny, not an alien one.
The Novakid pet is an angora rabbit, which is immensely adorable, but it's just not alien at all. It's just a glowing fluffy rabbit. That can be done with a touch of animal cruelty in real life.

The pets that would have been nice are on the game's page for stretch goals. Dogs, pink fuzzy things, small rhino/armadillo alien, and some kind of bipedal ladybug. I hope those end up as pets before long. The dog WAS available in the earlier koalas, but it's gone now and has to be spawned to be caught. It also doesn't act like a pet, but as a random monster.

 

I'm not sure I "get" your "I could easily make any of these pets in real life simply by mutilating regular earth animals" argument, but I agree that the pets pictured on the stretch goals page would be wonderful additions to the game.

And also they should speak like on that page. This is a must.

 

Side note: further experimentation has taught me that, at least as far as the cat is concerned, the color is random. My first cat was pure white, the second was orange and white. Still need to look into the effect of non-vanilla ships, but I'm pretty confident that they won't get the starter pets.

 

I think humans should get to choose between cats and dogs. Currently, the cat sprite is really bad. The neck looks very weird on the body.

 

I think the cat looks okay, but I would totally prefer a dog. I'm just a dog person.

Has anyone figured anything out about the system attached to pets?

 

Pets are buggy beyond belief. You can attack them, they instantly respawn, they don't eat, and you can't put them in capture pods. This is going to drive me nuts. Even worse is that I can't use my pets from my mod. Thankfully it's only Nightly, and this stuff will be fixed before stable.

I have fed mine. At least, when I threw down food (with q) they would go over, check it out, and sometimes would like or dislike the food item by displaying a heart or black scribbles over their heads. But that's as far as I've discovered.

 

My pig won't eat brains, so I'm gonna call it bugged until I can figure out how to mod that.

Still, I can't find anything that pigs eat. I thought they were like goats, eating anything you give them, but this pig is picky. I've thrown down every fruit I found, as well as some other stuff, but nothing.

 

Then you toss bacon at it...

And the universe goes mad.

 

Sad thing is, if put in front of it... a pig will eat bacon. They don't care.
Also, pigs eat snakes. I guess florans and glitch can't be friends anymore...

 

I replied to a post Tiy made on Reddit, he's confirmed that pets won't but customizable in any way. Hopefully we'll be able to find other pets (such as the currently existing lunar base cat) that aren't just randomly generated monsters.

Clearly, the solution lies in pestering him endlessly about it until he changes his mind, and not in modding or anything like that.
