Increased Planet Surface Visual Fidelity

  1. In the context of screens like this:
    I feel as though the land masses can stand to be a little stronger in contour. If this is a tedious job that none of the artists like to do, it can also be done procedurally.

    Here's an example from something I wrote up tonight as a proof of concept:

    the terrain is generated from perlin noise and then applying different colors to certain value ranges. The palette choice is arbitrary, as are the thresholds. There is also a displacement map filter to give it a spherical distortion.

    Excellent. The planets I've seen in screen shots so far seem like they have a lot of lakes but no oceans. It seems like your program makes a much more balanced land mass, and it could be tweaked more to produce different planet types. I use something like that for making maps before each D&D campaign I run.
