Digital "I just need to hone my skills"(LEARNING THREAD+ART DUELS)

hi, I've been wondering how to work on my line confidence, particularly on a tablet. Drawing by hand feels smoother than drawing by tablet, and it results in less attempts, but I'm not able to get the smooth, thin, yet solid stroke I see a lot of artists get.


To kinda show where I am, this is a sketch from this morning's commute, for clan infinity's alt 236 thread:

Should I consider doing an art duel for practice in the whole process or am I not there yet?

 

Well, for drawing on paper, I'd recommend using a moderately sharp pencil (not straight out of a sharpener). I usually put down more sketchy outlines at first, then make a smoother outline afterwards by pressing down a bit harder. Most of my paper is really smooth, but I've had trouble outlining with rougher paper.

As for digital outlines, I can't give too much advice as I'm not very good with them. The only warning I can give is to try preserving the anti-aliasing when making a thick line thinner. Removing it has generally only made things harder for me.

 

My advice for digital art, LAYERS EVERYWHERE. Use them to their full extent as much as you can. I normally have one for the pose/stick figure reference, sketch layer, color layer, shading later, and the line layer in that order from bottom to top. Also, when shading, I recommend taking advantage of the select tool as it can save a lot of time from having to shave off shading outside of the lines. But the tool is only as good as the user, so my art doesn't always turn out that good anyway, but they turn out much better than they could have otherwise.
