How does armor work?

    I was wondering how armor works. You equip it and it seems to affect your armor stat very little, or am I missing something? I was wearing copper chest and legs (both give 3 according to the game) and an iron hat (5) and my armor was 4? Is it average or something? Because if I just wear my hat it gives me 3, while putting on hat+basic clothing (both 2) gives me 4?
