Cannot paint certain dirt background tiles

Ok so i run a linux system and i was in a mine shaft i had created for a bunker system and decided to turn the dirt blocks from the natural green color of the planet to a brown color using the paint tool but it would not work i certain areas have no clue as to, why another user had the same problem but only they where under water

Try to put any foreground block on top, then remove it and try to paint it then. Should work.
Same as putting block, painting and then removing it.
