You are also at the other extreme though - if guns are not readily available like they are in America, not every petty criminal will have a gun. Sure, we may have crimes here which involve shootings but they are very rare. I think most of them involve something like a home invader using a hunting shotgun that hasn't been properly secured (It's the only sort of gun you can/would really own - a shotgun or rifle for hunting purposes).

It's not like there's some country wide black market for firearms.
