As Coal Ore is now required for more recipes (such as making torches) I thought it would be worthwhile to add an additional source of coal to the game. This mod allows players to use a Stone Furnace to turn wood (of the type that can be used as fuel for your ship) into Coal Ore on a 1:1 basis.

• Download the archive.
• Unpack the file within to: assets recipes starter stonefurnace
• Modify the file: fullwood1.matitem

A mod only two days after release? ... Looks like I owe someone some money.

 

While I like the idea I don't think the conversion should be 1:1, because with this you're doubling your fuel out of thin air. How about taking 3 wood, giving you 2 coal? It's still a slight advantage over using unrefined wood, but it would feel "better".

 

Personally I think the time taken up, sitting there for dozens (if not hundreds) of pieces of wood into coal more than makes up for the +1 fuel point per item.

 

Except it only takes 4 seconds. 2 seconds to find the recipe, 2 seconds to type in a number and click craft.

 

It's not crafting, it's cooking. Like making charcoal in Minecraft.

 

I am happy for this. Especially with ore rebalance making coal so rare.
