I've been playing starbound since the begining, but recently i've been noticing that the guards in villages have no armor or weapons, the only exception is the guards that have gold armor on. The guards in dungeons however have their gear still on. any help would be much apreciated. thanks
RyuujinZERO, the developer of the Avali mod, answered a similar question I had months back. For some reason, non-dungeon Guards, like the ones in villages, are flagged to ignore armor and such. So no matter what you see them wear or not wear, they're effectively using normal clothes with the other stuff as simple vanity armor. It's why they go down like a wet paper bag filled with bricks in higher tier planets.
