How about we take zombies, Agarans (The mushroom people for those who don't know) and some inspiration from The Last of Us? Mushroom that takes over your brain and body?

I wouldn't like to see any zombies as "Normal" mobs like in MC or Terraria, but space ships/space stations infested with them would be cool. And we already have those Apex mutant things.

As I've said earlier in this post, most people instantly jump to the conclusion of " brain-eating, shambling, rotting, reanimated corpses" when they hear the first notion of "zombies". I for one would LOVE to see a Dead Space stylized, for lack of a better word, "zombie" infestation on a long abandoned space station. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT give me stereotypical zombies in my, 95% Sci-Fi game. Give me something creative, put your minds into it and produce us something truly unique as our zombies. Space virus, parasitic bug, anything but the Hollywood zombies.

It's been that way for 15+ years. I don't know how long a fad can last but a decade seems like a stretch to me. Chances are if you are under the age of 18 you don't remember all the popular zombie movies that came out in the early-mid 00's and earlier, or the multitude of zombie appearances in games, but for us slightly older folks the zombie "craze" is nothing new. It's just talked about a little more in mainstream media due to the walking dead.

Zombies can be a lot of different things. virus, supernatural, manufactured, infested... As long as its not a main story point but a interesting quirk you happen upon sometimes out in the depths of space. Totally fine with it.

Which is exactly what a fad is.
You people are mistaking "cult popularity" with "fad".
Zombies were cult popular up until really The Walking Dead. They were popular, but under the radar, and only in specific circles.
Now they are fad popular, I.E. everywhere in mainstream media. They've become fad cash-cows.

I'm not going to argue definitions of words with you, but I'm not mistaking anything. Major hollywood studios have been steady releasing blockbuster zombie movies for over a decade, hell there is a new resident evil movie just about every year. That that isn't "cult popularity." There was even a very popular movie made in response to the surging popularity of zombies made IN 2004.

Don't really care what kind of undead (zombies, skeletons, undead-ish corpses, ghouls, liches, etc) as long as they get into the game somehow or another. And I'd also like to see a Reaver race which could be undead.

If by "major hollywood studios" you mean B and C list horror schlockfest studios, then yes. They sure have.
If said movie was so popular, why didn't you name it?

Zombies were not mainstream popular until recently, it's that simple. Sure, they had their fans, everything does. But they were not nearly as widespread and in-basically-everything in 2004 as they are now. You can't even boot up a survival game without zombies in it at some point..

    You know what'd be nice?

An expy of The Many from System Shock 2. That's a "zombie" of sorts- a shambling hivemind converted from normal sentient beings.

Could also justify a surface level flesh biome.
