Though this be madness, yet there is method in it. Zombies are becoming quite overused, especially in survival games. Starbound would do perfectly fine without them. Hell, we already have lobotomized Apex mutants.

There's enough room in the universe for the supernatural / magical.

i wouldn't be surprised if the inhabitants were comprised mostly of just that.

Depends. Magic has always been something that the devs said would never feature in the game. A lot of people agree with the notion, and think the game should be strictly sci-fi. But then the devs add an undead dragon anyway, which is kind of giving off mixed messages.

The tentacle planets, flying undead dragon, wizard npcs, sentient plant race, butterfly boost. All of these border on magical fantasy, and honestly I don't think this game is intended to be strictly sci-fi.

Aren't there Apex zombies already found in some labs? I'm 100% sure there is.
That, or those are just mutants/horribly deformed inviduals.

Or, maybe in the deepest darkest ruins found in the deepest dankest caves, revenants could roam the broken corrodors of ancient burried temples, guarding the treasures within. Frog spirits ribbiting hollowly through the darkness.

I'm really getting the feeling that when people hear the word "zombie" they automatically think of the stereotypical shambling undead zombies that many a game have used. I honestly think it would be great if we had some kind of mysterious alien virus that has infected the inhabitants of a space station long ago. That would also give the devs a great reason to put in the abandoned space stations drifting around random stars. The development team is obviously smart enough to come up with something creative to do with the idea of "zombies". I mean, they came up with all these other amazing designs. One thing I'm definitely not too pleased about is the skeletal dragon boss. I was severely disappointing to come to the mainly Sci-Fi game and get hit in the face with a dragon..made completely of bone...which somehow breaths fire... and also is somehow alive...Just my opinions I guess.

I guess it depends on Devs and their interpretation of the lore... meaning.. are Devs gonna flirt with fantasy? There is already some weird sh*t going on in Avian temples.
Also, sci-fi can clearly work well with some fantasy aspects (Star Wars universum and its Force, which Jedi and Sith use. What is the Force exactly? Hard to explain scientifically. Some would say it is "magic". Though that is like the only fantasish Star Wars aspect.) But these aspects must fit, if they are to be implemented in sci-fi universe and I think they could mostly hurt it. Like Bone Dragon? Srsly?
I am all for zombies, ghouls (Fallout much? :) Damn, there could even be a Ghoul playable race), but skeletons, ghosts, etc, please no.

That would still be the same mechanics as zombies.

Don't forget- a lot of Science was considered Magic before it was Science.

pls no halloween mobs. minecraft is almost 100% halloweeny monsters and terraria is zombies, skeletons, and flying eyes all over the place.

If you want over used hollywood monsters try ALIENS, give those cultists something crazy like that to worship. Capturing people to infest them and then entire planets get taken over by blood thirsty smart monsters is so much fresher than...it gets back up and walks into the door because BRAINS.

I never said ALL Magic has become Science. Sometimes you just gotta believe. Plus, on another planet it might just be science, who said we are only dealing with what we puny Humans know as "Science"?

SCIENCE. It's awesome. They say it's for research, solving important things and other noble stuff. But we all know it's all about blowing stuff up. That's why science exists.
And magic is a totally wonderful tool to blow up stuff. Am I logic?

It has the zombie/skelly/ghost theme in it, without involving magicz.

Zombies are fun in games like this just because you get to mow down hordes of mindless enemies. Individually they're weak, but they appear in groups, and they're dangerous that way. You'll run out of energy if you try to gun them all down, and you might not be able to swing your sword fast enough to stop the hordes. But they don't have to be classic fantasy zombies. In fact, I'd rather they not be classic fantasy zombies. There are plenty of sci-fi zombie options.

I don't want to see traditional rising-from-the-dead, crawling-out-of-their-graves horror flick zombies. I want to see Apex experiments gone wrong, or chemical warfare victims whose rational minds have been destroyed, or a mad Glitch's cyborg horrors, or Avians affected by some hideous bird flu, or... you know, space zombies.

  19. We've gone over this, zombies are so 2010.

If we're gonna have anything close to zombies it should be alien brain slugs, or something of the like.

Zombies are pretty played out at this point but I still wouldn't mind them. Just don't use the word zombies. Give them the rage like 28 days/weeks or Last man on earth nightwalkers. Just more mobs to kill either way which is never a bad thing.
