Think the rotating world might be the best way to do it. Sounds way fun to me too... would like to try melee battles with shields in space (in PVE and PVP).
The big bold lettering that said "Create New World" and "Load World." You could also download other worlds people created. Your character from one world was saved and went to new ones. But you know all of this, it wasn't all done inside the game. Example: if I forgot an item I wanted on one world, all I had to do was: leave, load, leave, reload. -That is faster travel than SPACE ships.
I don't want a reason to go to space, say to mine asteroids or anything, I just want to be in space! Nothing to do up there? Empty? No problem, I want to go anyway! If I had to build anything, space would be my first choice of area, just because I love it! However, not saying that there shouldn't be anything to do, mining asteroids is cool too! Also, I know there's a lot just with planets, but I think to achieve the biggest variety, you will have to have space too. I get your opinion, and I agree that planets are enough, but they might as well add space just for the variety!
I'd think it'd be less about glitching and more about orientation. People HATE not knowing which way is up.
Well mining and searching for fuel are cool, what about the possibility of a base in the asteroid belt. Of course you would either have to have and oxygen generator of sorts or just always wear a space suit, assuming the oxygen doesn't run out in it. Along with humanoids unique creatures would also be a welcome feature. But this entire post is assuming that the devs make space a place to explore.
My primary base would be in an asteroid if this passes through! I mean, who doesn't want to build this (except in 2D) Obviously, this example requires some sort of Gravity Generator, which is why everything is with only "one up". Without these you could build a base where some rooms are in other orientations than others. So
I think I'd prefer your character just float off into space if they don't have a certain item anchoring them down. Of course there would have to be a 'kill-yourself' button for obvious reasons. I'd really love to be able to build a proper base on an asteroid, with life support n' errything, though.
