Did a search for ideas and didn't find any so decided to start a thread. Since this is a space game, makes sense to have a biomes in space.

    1st biome: Asteroid field.

Different than going to a big asteroid and landing. This would be a field of floating rocks/ice and big chunks of rock/ice. To get around you can push from asteroid to asteroid -only real safe way would be to have a spacesuit and rocket pack. To access the biome, you would fly your spaceship there and open a hatch and get out. Could add spaceship functions like ship mining lasers or have other ships to fight/capture while still inside your ship.

Here is a link for an example of a field.
    http://www.todayifoundout.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Asteroid_Field.jpg

Types of enemies in the asteroid field:
    Space Pirates
    Asteroid miners
    Robots

    Types of blocks:
    Rare minerals
    Rare crystals
    Rare ice chunks
    Fuel for your ship

    Types of dungeons:
Large asteroid with mining shafts where space pirates hide.

    2nd biome: Near planet/moon orbit

Make a biome out of the area the ship orbits around a planet. Just open a space hatch and out you can roam. Same as before need spacesuit.

    Types of hostile areas:
    Space stations
    Derelict spaceships
    Satellites

    Types of enemies:
Enemies only spawn in hostile areas. So none around ship for new/weak characters.
    Alien monsters -inside ships/stations
    Space Pirates
    Robots

Could be a lot more to flesh out the idea, but think this is an ok start.

    What do you think?

The enemies you suggested are kinda bland. How about a school of mutant jellyfish? Or maybe golems made of space rock? Strange, demonic creatures that occasionally pop out of worm holes and attack you?

They are kinda bland... I leave the creative judgments to the devs and other posters. I just like the idea of space and zero gravity biomes. Extra cool monsters like you suggest is a bonus to what I would want -so it would be even better if they added your idea too.

Personal opinion? BEAUTIFUL DISASTER. I can imagine the chaos now... people randomly flying about trying to hack away at/shoot enemies with a single misstep resulting in having the hard, cold vacuum of space as your grave. As far as online goes ...what's that? PvP? in zero gravity? Huh? :iswydt: HECK YEAH! Count me in! o_O:eek::cautious::laugh::facepalm: This idea would be so freakin' awesome on pvp servers! The utter chaos, the randomness! Its all just so...yes. And this is coming from someone who doesn't pvp...

I also thought of this. What if the space ship malfunctioned and most the things in it became weightless?

    Also ,weightless liquids or fires..

    Mutant jelly fish? Rock golems?
    sounds like risk of rain

Haven't played it, or anything. I guess it's a coincidence?

This suggestion seemed so familiar that had to check List of Announced Game Information where this was :

Similar yes... difference is it is not a moon or large asteroid biome you walk around like any other world. This is basically putting space as a biome so you fly around outside your spaceship. The asteroid belt biome you would have to navigate around by flying in zero gravity. Not just run and jump like if on a low gravity moon with flying rocks and no atmosphere.

I agree, a space game needs a space biome! Also, I would like if you could just choose anywhere on the world map in outer space, and have an option like "Create Location" Making that empty space a new location, basically empty. This would allow for custom Space Stations with gravity generators or oxygen generators and farms, or it could be used for making a Satelite, just because it would be awesome. Maybe if it is a Satelite and it is close to a planet, it could be used for something like a full map of the planet from above (not showing caves).

But one thing is what wonders me; How will no gravity, being able to jump in all 360 degrees apply to square blocks? Being able to walk diagonal on blocks? Or is you character constantly bound to point 'upwards' all the time? My solution would be to be able to rotate your character (Maybe with Q and E?) and then try to land on you feet for movement, when jumping to something above you. Maybe the camera could rotate with you, or maybe the character is now just upside-down.

Anyways, Space Biome! Like the Empty Part! Multidirectional movement! Camera/Character Rotation! SPACE!

That's a neat idea. Realistically thought, you'd probably have to stick with the 'upwards all the time' aspect to keep things from becoming too complicated/glitchy. After all, its not like people normally do flips in outer-space. o_O :cautious:

It is a space game but you souldn't get out in space, or at least have a propeller of some kind. Yes, you could have some thing hapenning when you hit an asteroïd belt but I don't think that would need to imply your character getting out of the ship. Maybe avoiding one or two rocks, using a mining laser of some sort do destroy some, maybe even get loot from them but... you get the idea...

The space portion of starbound is based on travels.

For orbital biomes: Man that is not a biome, it's a big NOTHING. Ok, space stations, satellites. Give me my laser and they are gone! Alien monsters: from what I think I understood from the game there is seven intelligent species in this universe. I hardly see a way to get some "bad guys" in for no reason. Also, "orbital" biomes already exist: It is where your ship is when you are going on a planet.

Now, I know you could take this as a hater comment but think a bit: Starbound is a multi-verse game which goal is to provide you with multiple types of worlds in which you can mine and such. Just like in real life, the only reason you get in space is to travel and to observe the beautiful space environements. Not raiding some space stations or mining asteroïds. Starbound is not a space based game. It is a planet based game. There is going to be enough stuff at surface, don't you worry;)

Hmmm.. yes no one has recommended zero gravity biomes but some have recommended zero gravity planets. Anyway good thoughts.

Not a hater, difference of opinion is welcome. Many reasons to go out in space, repair and add features to your ship, search asteroids, derelict ships/stations, satellites. It is a big nothing from what we know, but the more people study the universe the more things are discovered which were thought impossible are actually prevalent.

But Satrbound is not a Space game. It is a terrain gam with the ability to go from one planet to the other.

Terarria was a terrain game with the ability to go from one world (or planet) to the other. I think starbound will be much more then terarria was even dreaming of becoming. No point in going up to space in a space ship and traveling through space without being a space game.

Just tell me exactly WHERE in terraria was there multiples planets?

I like the idea of 0G biomes.
Imagine finding a wrecked ship floating around in space or as mentioned before exploring asteroids.
    :)

Maybe you could stop to whatch the beautiful sights of space but not really explore.

In 0G up and down is all relative to the persons perspective, so it seems like the 'world' should rotate around the players character. in 0g biomes, the A and D keys could rotate the world around the player (instead of moving the world left or right like it does on planets). If you wanted to go somewhere you would have to point yourself in the direction and jump. Not sure if this would make for very good game play though. Sounds fun to me.
