Since beta is out in just over a week I assume most youtubers would have already got their copys.

I was just wondering if anyone knows the names of youtubers who have already started posting videos or give a link to their account?
I just really wanna watch some starbound!

Well, after doing a search in YouTube for "starbound," and filtering by uploads within the last week, there isn't much. But that's one way to find them ;)

I thought we would all get the game at the same time.....It isn't fair if some popular youtubers get a copy just fer being youtubers

No one has got a copy, and no one will get a "early" copy... And even if they do, they will only get it 1-2 days early lol I read a thing on the SB site about it

They stated that the press will get the game earlier only and only if the game would be ready earlier than the release date. So far it seems the game clearly is not ready for press release so I guess everyone will get Starbound at the same time.
And for those that think that it'S unfair for press to get games sooner than the usuall customers are wrong. Press usually have to do research on the game. It's different from of "playing" the game, you are analysing it and than you have to give some point about the game to the consumers that are still not sure if they want the game or not. This is what (for exaple) totalbiscut does in his "WTF is..." series.
Also it's other form of promotion for the game and indies can't really pay for advertisements so that's why indies are handing free games to popular or rather popular youtubers out there. Not that starbound needs this but every little bit helps out :)
Now this post will be full of crazy stuff, because I am just getting used to my new keyboard o.o

except youtbers who get games early, such as TB and angry joe are reviewers can do something that you cannot, plug a game to there millions of subs and bring it sales. but as far as im aware no-one has got them anyway? or did i miss something

  7. I highly doubt they're going to be releasing the game to ANYONE before the due date. Youtubers, critics, anyone.

Honestly; it's still beta. The very first stage to be exact; I'm not really complaining if some Youtuber who will probably make the game more noticed or some reviewer gets a hold of it a few days earlier because in all actuality, they'll be doing what we're doing. Testing for bugs and being overall guinea pigs for the devvies <3

If you can't trust the general public to make reasonable coverage of your product, I have to question the quality of said product. I mean after all, if its good enough, only real A-Holes will say anything incredibly negative about it. And even then, those people who just scream negative things all the time are more often than not ignored. The only one who benefits from getting an early copy is the YouTubers (because it drives more traffic to them do to little to no competition), in comparison to if everyone had the same chance. Plus if someone makes a video of the game with an iphone, their views are going to stay in the double digits, so fear of "bad content of said product" on YouTube doesn't exist.
Even then though, theres probably nothing to worry about as beta is only around the corner.

I'm pretty interested in what Total Biscuit is going to say, even though I loathe him more often than not. Even though CF is going to get hammered most likely for not having a comprehensive enough options menu (every fucking time with TB, never fails), and possibly for bugs, I feel like he may give it a fair shake since he seems to understand when a game is early on in development. I would not mind seeing him get a copy ahead of time, but it's a gamble, really. If TB rips it up, it'll probably affect sales. Angry Joe probably won't bother with it, since he seems to spend almost all of his time with console games anymore, probably even more so now that next gen has dropped.

EDIT: And I say "if he rips it up" knowing that he doesn't always give games a fair shake. When I want a fair look at something I go straight to Giant Bomb.

    I... that... this is interesting.

Why? Because TB stated plenty of times before HE WILL BE LPING Starbound with Jesse. So... if the game just so happened to suck, would TB suck up his pride and throw it into the dumpster and give up the LP (with all the mullahs that come with it), or bend and twist his opinion? I really doubt he sell-out though and twist his opinion, but I would be careful when he gives his opinion about Starbound though, I think they might be some biases in this one.

I personally though think everyone should be allowed to race at the same time, just for a more equal playing field.

Hey, for all I know he may have a copy already and has his mind set. But TB has been known to do drastic things and throw his weight around so I put nothing past him. Not that I don't have respect for him and many of his reviews, I just don't always agree with his hot-headedness and his ego. He could very well kill the Lets Plays early, who knows?

That being said, if they're planning on selling the game in its early-beta state to people on Steam, it could benefit them to give the large reviewers a bit of a small, early window. At the very least so they can have more in-depth videos ready to go on launch day.

There are only a very small number of things i could care less about than TB's opinion. On anything. I dislike the guy's attitude both on and off the camera and hope something happens in his career to really humble him back down to realizing he's just a guy who plays video games and talks about them.

More on topic, i am actually glad to see everyone will get a copy at the same time as opposed to some more well known names on youtube getting it first. This not only lets people experience the game with their own eyes first, but also possibly gives an opportunity for lesser known people to get a lets play done and become known. Talk about uneven playing field... The bigger names get games before everyone so their LP's go out first, then get more hits because of it, then are kept at the top of the searches because of the advantage they already have. Note: I have no intention of ever doing a lets play, i just hate how lopsided that whole thing is.

It's not fair, you're right. But it's a powerful marketing tool that's already in place and can immediately benefit the devs (if all goes well) if they give it to them a day or two in advance.

But to your original point, TB is definitely a prick. Well, that is to say, if I had a bucket of cheese fries, he wouldn't get any of them. But his reviews are accurate, from time to time.

Call me uneducated or stupid, but i still cannot get why this has any benefit. I've went in dept about it in another thread regarding the youtubers but i'll give a quick rundown of why it makes no sense to me.

    Situation 1
Youtubers get it first. They make LP's, and people watch them. Game gets released people buy it. Yay.

    Situation 2
Everyone gets the game at the same time. Some people wait around for a LP so they see gameplay before they buy. Big names get the game, make an LP, put it out. People watch it, they buy the game.

In situation 2, people still saw it, and people still bought it. In fact, the downside to situation 1 is that whenever i see a review of a game that is not available to purchase, i actually get frustrated and wind up never buying the game. When i see game play videos of something on youtube i like, i want to buy it and play it myself. I don't go to youtube to essentially watch commercials for upcoming shit. If i wanted to do that, i'd to places like ign or watch tv.

Because Day One sales and pre-orders are really important. Higher Day One sales and pre-orders get games noticed, and increase the potential sales the game will get.

Noticed by who? I'm not being a smart ass or anything, but i don't see how it makes any difference. Maybe i'm too uninterested in such things, but all the games i see are the "New releases" on steam, or shit i hear about from other people. I've not once had someone tell me "THIS GAME SOLD OVER X COPIES DAY ONE! YOU SHOULD GET IT!!!!".

There's a little thing called hype.
When people get hyped for stuff articles get tend to get written, people spread news via word of mouth and things in general get pre-ordered.
In "Situation 2" people would likely wait for a sale rather then buying the game straight away, but in "Situation 1" people get hyped and end up buying the game on day one/pre-ordering it.

This is 1/2 of why it's a good idea. TB, Angry Joe, Giant Bomb, etc. all have HUGE amounts of viewers. Many of which may have no idea that the game even exists. Not only does it showcase that yes, this game exists and it's coming out in a day or two but it can also get people looking into what the game has to offer. You can get more followers, you can get more sales, and the reviewers benefit from potentially getting more subs/views from the community that are looking for the LPs/reviews.

The idea is to get as many people to tweet, like, buy, and share the game as much as possible. The installed Youtube base can help do this.

The only way it's a detriment to the devs is if it tanks in the reviews, but that's ultimately going to happen anyway once they release it on Steam.

EDIT: Kinda goes back to why they selected Yogscast to LP the game at i49. Maybe not a good idea in the minds of some, but ultimately gave the game more visibility.

Pretty sure the Yogscast got to do it because they were already doing stuff at i49.
