It's probably not Bound TO the stars, that would be painful...

Bound onto the stars then? :iswydt:

    I'm a fan of bound FOR the stars...but I think that is because I'm a Trekkie. :p

Well... that was insanely off-topic. :p

I think they could either go with steering via 'viewscreen' through a semi 3D environment
They could go fast travel using 'coordinates' (the planets being like minecraft seeds)
    Or even a minigame!

They have said that they are going to use coordinates, like you described. But I think it would be cool to have a procedurally generated star map that allows you to click on stars that you have visited. It could be minimalistic, but it would help me to have a sense of spatial relationships between planets.

You're playing the role of a ship captain right? The captain doesn't fly the ship, the pilot does. So you probably just pick the coordinates and the pilot "flys" there. (Quick Travel Style)

It would be neat if the Starmap were graphical though instead of just two inputs boxes, so you can see a few coordinates around you as well :p

I don't think this seems very much like a "space travel" kind of game, one game (an arcade game that I'm blanking on) did a thing that was also 2D and you would be in a spaceship going forward shooting stuff...I didn't like this, you can't do this in a 2D game!
    In shorter words... NO

I agree, it would be nice to have all the planets organized in simple procedurally generated systems and galaxies.

Well we won't really know until the devs release some screenshots, basically all the info we've got so far is "Co-ordinates" and "Star Map"

EDIT:Also, if you're trying to get people's attention, use white. It's much less of an eyesore than red text all over the page.

I would like it if travelling was manual, e.g. controlling your space ship, but I think the devs have chosen to go with a starmap that you point and click depending on which planet you would like to go to.

So maybe by getting enough coordinates, you complete the map for a system?
I think the procedurally generated planets are more compareable to the seeds in minecraft
If you put in the coordinate, no matter who's game you are on, it will result in said planet

EDIT: And maybe decimal points of coords may be needed, and if you aren't specific enough, a set of coords, result in a random planet that can range from any of the coords that include the decimals or something

I love the idea of space travel. I was thinking that there would be an infinite number of planets. I like being able to be finished exploring one planet then going to the next one without running out of planets and having to create a new world. It was something Terraria and Minecraft where missing. After I got full hollowed armor or 30-40 diamonds with out having anything to use them on, I would find my self a bit bored with the game and end up starting completely over. Adding space travel to these kinds of games almost makes the possibility of things to do endless!

I think the travel system will be quite nice, I just hope they have a traveling animation.

If the planets are generated like I expect (perlin noise), it should be possible to reverse engineer the algorithm to generate a "complete start map" that shows all the coordinates that have planets. Other details (such as type and level) might be more difficult to determine but not impossible.

Maybe sometime in the future we could just fly around in space and encounter interesting things E.X: An abandoned spaceship.
Or sometimes while your flying to a planet you get attacked by space pirates and have to defend the dropship!

Some planets will likely remain set at the same threat level
Some will be adjusted to your stats I bet
I'm just saying, lets assume this is like Minecraft, when it comes to the coordinates
There could literally be an endless amount of planets, and I am going to venture that race may determine home planet, start point could vary.
    This would be interesting though

I seriously don't think Starbound will have room for Manual Space Travel on Release. Maybe in the future... but I dunno about even then, we might need all of our time for the Planet Exploration, having manual Space Travel on top of that might be a bit much workload for us Space Explorers.
