What are your thoughts on travelling between planets in Starbound? Will you have to fly the ship with the keyboard or just click where you want to go? What system do you think would work best, will there be a "fast-travel" option like in Skyrim?

Just post your thoughts on how travelling through space will work in Starbound. :)

it would be nice to actually be able to travel in your ship... but there are plenty of other awesome features of starbound.

To discover a new planet, you have to enter random coordinates, albeit you usually end up nowhere just as you would IRL (if space travel were real :p). Then I guess once you HAVE discovered a new planet, it would be added to your starmap so you could "fast travel" to them.

you start the game on a space station... is your space station near a planet, because you have to start on a level one planet.

Space Ships, that would be the most fun way of Space Travel, i always imagined StarBound with Space Ships as the most used way of travel from Planet to Planet, Space Statoin to Planet, to tell the truth I'd be pretty disappointed if Space Ships don't get implemented into StarBound. I think Space Ships would be AWESOME!

You know what would be better? getting to build and ride spaceships in certain worlds <mainly for bosses which cant be defeated [close to impossible] on foot>

It would be really awesome to have space battles like in Batttlefront. but I know that is not really like starbound...

This thread is really nice talking and debating on How will space travel work :).
I think it will start with a simple space ship that can (hopefully) be customized.

Magic Mirrors? Like in Terraria there is the Magic Mirror that takes you to you spawn point, for example: Magic Mirror to Darkbound, teleports you to the main spawn on planet Darkbound, but you can find the Magic Mirror from the planet itself, like at planet Kitty Planet (Kitty planet is made up from my head just like that lol) theres a main boss somewhere you need to find and fight, then the boss drops the Magic Mirror as a loot, and other things :DD But ofc you can use your space ship to travel tpp if you want, but you need to find the planet with your space ship first :DD Does this sound like a good idea? :DD

I think that there should be a mixture of "regular traveling" and "fast traveling.
Regular traveling: You simply drive your ship through space. Traveling this way will expand the star map and if you discover a special location it will show up on your star map.
Fast traveling (A feature that exists in a lot of games): if you don't feel like flying all the way to a location that you have already discovered, assuming that you are not in danger, you can go to your star map, select the location, and then BAM! You are in that location. One thing that would be pretty cool is that if you get intel about a location from a different source (not traveling), then you can still fast travel there.

That sums up the whole fast travel thing pretty nicely.

I also like the idea about being able to fast travel somewhere after someone else (an npc possibly) tells you about it. :D

EDIT: The star map thing from the confirmed data page was a bit vague, it could still potentially work something like this...

read the entire thread, say that a certain amount of planets are already open(10 maybe more), you get drop-shipped down to one of the planets and your drop ship sends out a nice little beacon and expands the star map just enough to reveal a few more planets and their info which you could keep jumping between planets and so on, you could also research satellites or something like the Hubble space telescope and send them off to planets and let them gather info, but i also like Zman's idea very much, and wouldn't mind playing the game like that, it would feel more open to either fast travel because you want something there quick or go there through the ship to enjoy the travel and it's music stopping by to see some planets to get more info and so on, kinda like Skyrim

I don't like the idea of manually flying to different planets. It would be confusing and take too much coding, and a complicated system to make it correspond with the infinite amount of procedurally generated planets. I do like the idea of being able to at least design your ship so you can admire it in the space station hangar. ;)

that's true! guess i never thought of the devs and their work to make an already "limitless" game, i wouldn't mind a simple way to get from planet to planet when put like that.

I don't think that there should be manual control of the ship. I always thought that in Starbound players will have the role of captain of spaceship/station, and all other questions would be maintained by NPCs. That's why to fly somewhere, captain should just give an order to the crew. Also, I think that if there would be space battles in Starbound, they should be carried out in similar way. You just give orders, and the rest depends on your ship and your crew. Also, while in battle, player still could travel along the ship to help extinguish fire, repair equipment and so on.

Main point: I doubt that there will be separate gameplay mode for space traveling and battles. Rather it would be classical sidescrolling view with the possibility to give orders to NPCs (maybe only when you are on the bridge, or something like that). But of course, it's only my speculation :)

Yes, Battlefront 2 had epic space battles. That was the most fun I have ever had in a space combat game! However, it would be difficult to fit something like that into the Aesthetic of Starbound that the devs are working on.
