Not supporting games like this at all, but some people do seem to like that sorta thing... I mean there are actually games out for the DS like "Nintendogs" and "Imagine: Babysitter."

  2. I would dare even suggest that, gasp, modern warfare games are IN FACT NOT REALISTIC.
Please research the term "simulation" before naming games that have nothing to do with it.

If it's a fantasy game, then realism can get kicked to the curve. If it's a game that's trying to be realistic, then add realism.

Exactly my point, people "claim" that MW is realistic.
Those are meant for stupid little girls with no logical goals.
    The hell?

These are the types realistic effecs that fit into a 2D game well.

    Indeed.

EDIT: Actually, I have seen a few boys playing Nintendogs... Surrounded by others repeatedly shouting "Penis" into their microphone when they're trying to train their dog...

It all depends on which "realistic" elements are implemented.

Like in the Battlefield series, bullets are effected by gravity, which forces you to calculate bullet drop over medium to long distances,
however, bullets are not affected by wind, which would make them curve and also affect bullet drop even more.

Battlefield's system is great, it tries to stimulate realism, but doesn't cross to line when attempting this.

Do you get what I mean?

Sure it's likely fun to bullshit with those games and play them horribly on purpose for a laugh but still.
What. Are you telling me that a Sniper Rifle shot would arch down before flying a mile? A Sniper Rifle shot wouldn't arch down after 5 miles. Not realistic.

  9. Well, some people actually like simulations. Why do you think Sims 1 was one of the most popular games on any console in its heyday? Its fun and interesting to interact with a simulated being or world. Just because you or your friends don't like that doesn't mean that anyone who enjoys simulation games is either stupid or not taking it seriously.

(edit: And yes, I say ONE because I really don't want to go touring google just to make a facts-check whether it was -the- most popular one.)

I like just a pinch of realism, enough to not go "wtf". Though we might encounter that looking at some funky generated monsters.

I DO enjoy the sims, but instead of doing the thign with doing normal stuff I just roasted marshmallows until my character burned to death and possessed people.

  12. I once tried playing it for real (rather than cheating of just fooling around), and I found that I enjoyed that far more than just screwing around.
Regardless. I'll stop dragging this topic further off course.

After reading this, I have come to the conclusion that most of non-realistic mechanics can be explained using handwavium.

    - No need to eat? Handwavium nanobots fabricate it.
    - High jump hight and ability to fall down 40 feet and not get hurt? Handwavium boosters on your boots.
    - Weight limits? Handwavium (or magnets) that nulls gravity and inertia.
    - Inventory Slots? Handwavium magnets can only manage a certain amount of objects.

Other examples can be explained via other means.

    - Non-nondescript injuries? You don't know what is hurting you, all you know is that a part of your body hurts.
    - Life on most planets? Make the universe a little older and add cosmic despora to the equation.
    - Able to breath on planets (or infinite oxygen)? Spacesuit purifies gases.
    - Multi-hits from weapons? Armor + Shields.

Handwavium: the solution to all your (fictitious) problems.

As long as it feels right, realism isn't needed. For example, in Super Mario Bros you can jump like 20 feet into the air. It's unrealistic, sure, but it feels right and it makes the game more fun.

Just slightly realistic physics i suppose. But i mean maybe they would behave differently on one planet then on another. like on one you can jump higher because it has like 1/2 of the gravity you are used to or whatever.

It would be nice to have some realism like in Minecraft but not too much that you go "fuuuuuuuuuuu......." I'm pretty sure you know what I mean.

    I completely agree.
    Gravity? Who needs it.

I honestly think realism depends on the game and gameplay. As an example, Day Z. I love the idea of having to eat drink and use bandages to heal your self since it's a zombie survival "simulator". On the contrary, I hate the idea of having to carry food on me to eat even if Im not doing anything like Minecraft. I honestly don't think you should compare 2 FPS games to a game like Starbound since they are COMPLETELY different. (Btw the only reason people can take sniper bullets to the face in 'COD' is because 12 year olds complain that they get killed so easily) If Starbound had hunger I would be very, very disappointed. If I read it correctly the Devs said that food would be used to heal.

Now things like jump height and physics still depend on the game. As someone said before (Sorry forgot your name :p) is that jump height is in Super Mario because it fits with the game. Jump height In an FPS game is like it is, (Or at least the FPS I have played) Short and not super high, is because it fits with the gameplay. Starbound does have races though so maybe jump height depends on your race?

    In conclusion (In my opinion)

-I wouldn't like to see hunger bar in Starbound but if the developers think it needs to be there to balance the game, so be it.
-Jump height should be a little bit higher than human capabilities, since not all the races are human.
-Applying gravity to blocks and players could possibly depend on the planet. If I didn't like the gravity, I would just move to another planet that has would I like.
-Health should definitely NOT be one hit kills because that would really ruin the game.
-Dropping Inventory really sucks. I mean, who would want to lose all their cool stuff they worked so hard for? Not me. :)
-Regenerating health is really debatable. I like the health regen but somethings need to be balanced so maybe really slow regen?
-Breathing under water in a lot of games I've played haven't been possible and I'm not sure this game should be an exception without some sort of device.

All in all, Every game really needs to be balanced for fun, but only to some extent so it's not some sort of gmod sandbox. I support the devs in anyway they feel to sculpt their games and change anything they want to make the game balanced..
