After discussing a lot of stuff about realism in the game, and how it affects gameplay, I wondered what you guys (and ladies) think about this topic.
Just post what is your thought on realism in the game, how much of it should be in it,
how this might affect gameplay, and on what of both are you focusing on.

    For my thought:
I think that realism in a game with a lot of potential like Starbound is a crucial thing.
Without enough realism, even thought it's a sci-fi game, the game would not be as polished
as it seems to be from my perspective. As a supporter of realism, I almost preferr realism
over what could be better for the actual gameplay. But just almost. I think that Starbound
should have as much realism in game as possible, as long as it does not affect the gameplay
in a way of making it boring. It's actually mostly the unrealistic stuff that makes games interessting,
but the realism just gives you a connection to what you know from childhood on.

I would be happy to see your thoughts.
    Take it easy

I like all of your ideas that I have seen, but they don't seem like starbound. all of your realism things have been about mining, which has been said to be in game, but I think (maybe not) that is is a little more on fighting and exploring. So do you have any treads about that stuff, if so could you please link me. thanks!

Well I know everyone is thinking about it so I'll just say it, the hunger and durability meters in minecraft are just plain annoying and not fun at all. When I play a video game I don't want to have to put a hold on the kind of things I want to do. Motivation a purpose (I think) is the driving force behind a game. You want to feel like you really want to do something but if you have something that stops that drive then it's game breaking.
Realism is great because it makes you believe that this world could be something that actually exists but there is a point to where it just isn't fun anymore and I believe the Devs realize this. That's why I'm so excited for Starbound.

Sure the hunger bar in Minecraft anoys me too, but the thing with the durability is just something that fits in. If you just need 3 diamonds and you have a diamond pickaxe forever (until you die, of course), it seems like something very odd. Only craft one wooden, one stone and one iron pick, and you would never craft a pickaxe again, just doesn't fit the way minecraft is made.

I don't think realism fits on 2D games , such as 1 shot = 1 kill or hunger system. All this game needs from the real world is the physics and chemical laws :proper:

    That also counts as realism.

Realism should be an option. Some people like casual games.

If we talk about the full aspect of realism on a game no matter what genre it is, it might spoil it if the game implements it 100% but it depends on how the creator will implement it. As of why sometimes a balance is needed, need to put things in a way that it will make it fun to play, but also realism might work too for a difficulty option for the game if it is implemented correctly to provide a challenge like simulation games of flight sims except of course the g force that makes you black out and crash and deducing you paycheck for almost 50 million dollars for crashing the jet.

I tend to prefer games to have a degree of realism. Fall damage, friendly fire, etc. But if its going to make the game tedious, prolly best to leave it out.

I think your original topic could have been better worded, in all seriousness.

As for realism, we must remember it is a game:
    >I don't want to have to eat and drink to stay alive because that sucks.
    >I don't want my mount to get tired.
    >I don't want to get broken bones - either I'm fine with loss of health or I'm dead.
    >I don't want to have a limit to the weight I can carry because things are easily heavy.
    >I don't want to have to wear a space suit on every planet.

The list goes on although I can not be bothered to type it.

I like realism in games. It adds purpose to choice. And its always fun to solve problems, it just sparks my creativity. It seems easier for me to actually react to given problems than to act just out of sponatinity. My example would be: I'm exploring a new world, and i can build whatever i want, whenever i want and wherever i want. I just have a hard time to come up with something, except maybe something resembling a house with a living and sleeping area and lots of storage. I need motivation. So imagine a character would need food. There are could be various sources where to get food, but since i am new i can only hunt or gather food. It might be too time consuming if you have to hunt all the time to not starve. So instead of complaining that the stupid hunger system dictates my playstyle i feel motivated to find a better solution to sate my hunger. Maybe you could build a farm that gives you enough food. Or maybe later its even possible to assemble some kind of food replicator. Or you could buy food from natives on the planet. I'd just think that its awesome to find many different ways to solve a problem. Plus it would make some planets more difficult to live on. A dead world, would not just look dark and desolate, it would be hard to acquire food from the environment at all. Maybe you would have to build some kind of biodome on that planet to have food. Until that works you would have to get supplies from the space station or other planets to survive.

    Realism like that, i like.
