If you'd bothered to read my posts, you'd see I bowed out of this thread 10 pages ago.

My bad, I thought I noticed your name on the last page and I only read pages 1-4 + 15. Nevermind then.

Yea, pretty much agree with all of that. My interpretation is pretty much that the game world is a light-hearted representation of a futuristic but for the most part realistic universe... but that interpretation is based on very, very little, as existing lore is extremely limited at the moment. Whether or not this suggestion would be an improvement to the game is highly dependent on lore that is yet to be released.

If the story line and surrounding universe turn out to be as nonsensical as some of the Dr. Suess-ish visuals in game, then if they want modern drills to be a highlighted tool in a futuristic setting, fine. Hell, they could use a friggin' vaccuum cleaner that mines by sucking up tiles and ores if the game follows that kind of logic.

Until that's established, though, I'm going to assume that, regarding lore, things like physics and technological progression adhere to what is realistically plausible. If that assumption turns out to be incorrect, then so be it.

agreed. but when it comes to the use of bows i found that when you find a gun bows are then useless because i already got a decent farm going and i have found that many monsters still drop meat upon death. not as often as a bow tho but i could understand it if i used a grenade launcher to kill it. but the slow progress in technology i like. mainly because i love to work hard for things. i quite like my diamond drill. so all in all i like the way this game is headed

Actually, a diamond pickaxe would be very effective. The only problem would be, y'know, the extreme amount of heat and pressure you would need to mould it into a pickaxe...

    perhaps chemical bonding?

False. Diamonds are hard on the Moh's scale but that only shows resistance to scratches. Diamonds can be broken by hitting them against something easily.

Also, you would need a massive solid chunk of carbon to compress it to pickaxe size. I know it is just a game but I would prefer more sci fi or at least realistic tools.

Sorry, but I'd have to disagree with this. I think drills are a perfectly fine advancement... We currently don't have drills the size of people's heads that are held in two hands. And have a motor the size of a hockey puck. Besides, it's better than having some sort of mining laser.

You were saying? It may not be cartoony like the one in game but they exist.

Dunno if anyone suggested that (too lazy to read everything), but maybe we can have several simultaneous trees doing the same? Like let's say drills and mining lasers? So people can just choose whichever they prefer. Just like in Terraria they added pickaxes from hardmode materials for people disliking drills. They all work the same, just look and sound different.

Pick vs MM doesn't really impact whether or not the game is sci-fi - as explained in the OP, they both have their place, and fit the lore / scifi setting just fine.

That said, those polls do a good job of showing the devs what the playerbase would like to see more of, so +1.
