I'm in delta sector and have not come across a single meteor. I'm sad

I'm only on a tier 2 planet (I believe it was a snow biome) and I heard a loud crash when a bunch of trees fell. I went to look and sure enough, there was a meteor crash. so 88 meteor rocks later I still have no clue why they are useful

So far? They're pretty annoying. I built a massive tree farm on a planet (Around 8 k wood per harvest) and then suddenly I hear explosions. CONSTANTLY. Keeps knocking down my stuff. Built a shield above them to no effect, either.

They really need to be changed. Have them spawn in the upper atmosphere, less frequent, maybe. And make blocks that can actually withstand them! Geez.

I saw my first meteorite in the Gamma sector as I beamed down to prepare for the Dragon boss. Immediately a huge planet streaks across behind me and crashes 1 screen over... leaving a 35x40 block hole in the ground. I promptly beamed back up to my ship and went to bed.

My new character started on a meteor impacted world, so I'll be following this thread with interest. I'm guessing that meteor strikes are more common on a planet which has an asteroid field in the planetary orbit. That's the case with my current planet. Meteor strikes happen maybe once for 2 minutes every 2-3 game days.

Yup, I live in a bunker etched into a mountain, reinforced by cobblestone block maybe 40 layers thick on the top and sides.

I was on a desert planet in Gamma and been there for 5+ hours IRL with no weather or meteorites.. By this point one would assume neither would ever occur.. NOPE! I finally summon the dragon boss and in the middle of the fight....

    !!!A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS!!!

Quintuple (5) Meteorites! Not little ones... They were very large I'M GONNA WRECK YOUR WORLD class meteorites.. With a little help of the dragon boss, it proceeded to do just that.. I died an epic death complete with explosions that would make Torgue proud.. I return to the scene of the crime and there was nothing left of my arena and a crater deep as a mountain is tall.. The edge of the debris and blast radius was within 20 blocks of my fort.. I just finished packing up my things and leave only the husk of the stone castle and what was a mountain that it sat upon..

Y'know those giant meteors? Imagine a gun that shoots them every .001 second. I was going to use it for mining but I didnt realize they leave meteorite block behind... so it's basically just a lag cannon.

I've had two encounters so far.

    1. Running around on a beta planet, it started raining tiny meteors. These did minimal damage, but I had a lot of free rock.

    2. I was in X sector, cleaning up some fungus (read; entire mushroom village being leveled), and it became night. Seeing as I don't care for night time ingame, I just box myself in, put my character in a bed, and alt tab for 10~ minutes. I come back, and find holes everywhere, my box gone, and half the remaining mushroom village completely leveled. Best part is that I was surrounded by meteorite rock, but my bed and where I was were untouched.

Question for you (just because I don't know, not in any way to be challenging ;) )

As Home Worlds can be "Set", if one chooses a new home planet after travelling they system for a while, do you suppose that the pre-existing weather/natural disasters will be reset to this "safe mode" as indicated in the protection features you've spoken of? I can imagine many folk will choose thier home planet (if they go that route) over the planet they start with.

Wrong. You can clearly see from the diagram that all meteorites are meteors before impact (where an atmosphere is involved. Otherwise, it goes directly from meteoroid to meteorite.)

Start game. Build base in first planet (forest biome). Fall huge meteor that destroys everything. Close game.

I was on a desert, found a nice avian city. Couldn't enjoy it for for a minute because as soon as I stepped for inside the city a meteor strike ruined it all.

I wouldn't be dumb enough to build on a meteor prone planet. I generally get an idea of the planet ahead of time, and spend an ingame day or two there to see the types of weather it has. I do agree that they shouldn't spawn just off screen, though.

Was playing on a server with 7 other people. We were actively converting a UMSC prison into a base, had just finished filling a large pool with water in the east wing when a meteorite struck and demolished the whole wing and flooded a good chunk of the middle section. It was both hilarious and infuriating. I don't think the meteors should be nerfed however. Fixed so they do not spawn inside of buildings or underground certainly but not reduced in power.

As someone said above some planets just aren't meant to be built upon, sorry if you spent a lot of time building only to get smacked by a meteorite but hey that's life exploring the unknown.

Any know of a link to a video of a meteor impact (not the showers)? I haven't experienced it in game yet and would like to see what I'm up against.
