would love a pre-order for it

I would pre-order the game!!! :D I love sandbox RPGs!
I would love to get some kind of ridiculous item for pre-ordering. Nothing that makes the game unfair like those other games where you get some crazy weapons and whatnot, but something special for your avatar or a silly pet.

You know, dudes working on Starbound, this is a thing I have been waiting for. Patiently. Of course I will give you my money in advance (allowing your people to eat and make games). As will a good many of the people I keep in touch with. You have an awesome product, environment, and community here and we want to support that thing.

As far as the technical details go, I would make the following suggestions:
    • Do Paypal, but expect them to be dicks about it. Paypal is easy, but they are notorious for seizing accounts and holding funds. So, I don't know, let them know ahead of time that you're doing a beta opening? See if you can bypass some of their shenanigans? Some folks won't be able to do Paypal, so other options are also good. Goofnik really early on made some good suggestions (page..2?) and I'll double those recommendations.
    • Steam access is vital. I don't know how much I can stress this point to get it across. Steam makes the process of dealing with multiplayer significantly more palatable and while I will jump through hoops to make MP games happen, I would be much happier not having to in the first place.
    • For the tiers, digital things are nice, but physical things are even nicer. Make stuffed plushies of one of the Monsters-of-the-Week or something. A limited number of them, or unique individual ones, would be awesome and encourage people to push those donations higher. Art is good too, but I personally prefer stuffed aliens :3 (Assuming you can do this reasonably and not tax yourselves too much trying to fulfill the required items) It'd be pretty easy and effective to rip a tier system right off of Kickstarter and then plant in your own stuff. I am betting you can get some neat, cheapish 3D printed stuff if you have folks willing to kick out some models in 3D Studio or Maya, though fragility might be an issue there.
    • Put in a $1.00-$5 rank for younger community members who might not have the credit card/funds to buy the game, but want to help out. Maybe with donator badges on the forums. Looking out for the little guys here.

I will admit that "Coming 2013" sounds daunting, but that's part of the process, right? I will temper the fervor with which I wish to play your game with the knowledge that I'm helping in my own small way to make it happen.

Why would you release a beta? Please don't, just release the finished game when it's done.

Most people would go for a pre-order version, of course. We're fans of something we barely know, but hell we're great ones! Just want to add somethings.

    PRICE
    - Don't make it too low, IMHO. 10% discount is great for a beta version, IMHO, unless you are in deep need for $$$.

    PAYMENT SERVICES
    - Please, add Paypal.
    - If possible add your own payment method, certified by some company that does that stuff too... For a fan, I'd rather not pay Steam some % if I know most of it will go to the developers.

    ADVERTISING
    - If you're going for steam in order to get it available to more people: great. But do other stuff to promote the game.
    - If this is "doneable", make so people who pre-order AND share the Starbound link in Facebook get a discount or something similar.

Hi, Tiy. The majority of what you're saying sounds viable except for the 2013 timeframe, which is too large. If it were narrowed down to a more accurate release date that'd be great. Opening pre-orders is definitely a great order, especially if it gives both the devs and gamers what they want ($$$/earlier release.)

As for pre-order tiers I'm not really too sure but what you said about physical and/or digital soundtrack/artbook sounds fine. I'd prefer for it to be a direct digital release and would love a Steam key. Starbound would definitely make headlines on the Steam Store. You should have the game for sale through as many payment services as possible though, that'd bring the greatest income and give the fanbase the greatest flexibility in purchasing options.

One last thing though, you haven't stated a solid price. We'd all like to know the MSRP and the discounted pre-order price. I think $15-$20 is fair, since it's like Terraria but has more content.

Addendum: This is an important one.
You should give a further slight discount for Starbound 2/3/4 packs. One copy for the purchaser, the rest to give away. Exploring the stars is always better with friends.

A great idea, however, I'm not sure the price tag should be too small!

Distribution throuh steam is awesome, and otherwise PayPal is a great tool!

All of your mentioned rewards sounds awesome aswell, and the time frame shouldn't be too much of a worry.. I do think everyone will be better off with a proper, finished product, than a product released too soon. We've all seen that all too many times!

Keep up the great work, and best wishes to you all! :)

I would love to see a preorder. I dont have a ton of money to devote to video games, but this is the one game I am KNOW I will buy. The price reduction is a great thing and it sounds like it helps you out as well. Win/win. I have been itching to try the beta as well and the more people we have on steam playing the game, the more lmy steam friends are likely to buy it.

    TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!

Heh, as long as I get the steam key I'll preorder whenever you feel like it. Heck I'd pay full price too.

I would appreciate a Steam digital pre-order, teirs wont matter to me, i will probably buy the biggest one as a full pre-order, i loved terraria (was sad to see everyone leave the project actually, it had alot of potential) and im am looking GREATLY with anticipation forward to this game, aka "Tiy, shutup and take my money via steam."

Yes please! I'd like to see it on humble store myself especially since they provide steam keys and torrent links sorted by platform and it's all really convenient.

I don't know if it's been suggested or not, but preorders and perhaps a 'four pack' would be -really- nice. To encourage people to get a copy of the game for their friends (as if that's not already happening!) for inevitable and amazing multiplayer shenanigans.

Honestly? I'd love to see a pre-order, I will happily purchase the game, be it as a discounted price, or at full price eithier way I'm happy.

Right now the only thing that worries me is deliviery method, there's a reason I use steam for most of my games these days, it's reliable I don't mind them having my bank information, or my CC information. As long as you guys can promise a good, secure way to release the game I'm all for a pre-order.

I would ask something though, whatever median you delivier this awesome game to us on, allow us to purchase multiplte copies please. I plan on getting it for my roommates, and family, as, at present I'm the one doing well in the group in life, so I can afford to buy them the game and I'd like to do so. Never the less as said I'll buy it eithier way, but I'd prefer a safe and secure method, I'm rather against paypal, but whatever the majority vote is on, I'm good for Tiyuri, and I'd happily throw money at you guys to make your lives a little easier during development, and to get this great game out sooner because your team isn't stressing.

I like the 'Name a Star' idea. It would be more fun if you could pick an NPC race that is always present on one of the planets.
