I'm 100% for preorder bonuses like having a lower price and beta access (a la Minecraft but with a much shorter time in beta hopefully!) I like that you come right out of the gate as against preorder-only in-game items--those are fine gimmicks for console games that are likely to have little replay value but not for something like Starbound that I hope to wring dozens of hours out of (hopefully over a hundred). You've pretty much got my preorder secured already.

I have mixed feelings about preordering. On the one hand, it allows me and others to provide you guys with financial support, guarantees us the game upon release, even beta access and possible extras, not to mention speeding up the development in the first place and hopefully making a few of the devs' lives easier. On the other, however, I worry that the pressure of preorders might push faster, less elegant coding, not to besmirch the good names of the programmers, and cause you to move away from the 'it's ready when it's ready' attitude that I like so much. Considering your obvious commitment to the game I think this unlikely, but it worries me all the same. Additionally, as
this does mean that you cannot really afford to encounter any unexpected issues or delays which will set back the release date. While most people who are planning to purchase the game will no doubt be understanding, and are not concerned with when it comes out, only that it actually does so in a good state, I suspect that a number of others will be put off, and end up not purchasing the game, or even, through a sense of entitlement (which, as mentioned above, is partially justified by preordering) become opposed to the game, and work to reduce your sales. This is the internet, there are, unfortunately, crazy people, even if they're not quite so common as they seem.

So, in TL;DR form, I definitely like a lot about the idea of preordering, and I would say that I'm in support of the idea. It's just that I have a niggling sense of it seeming to undermine the attitude that this game and website seem to be built around, and even if I have no real reason to believe that it will, it still worries me.

Regardless of what eventually happens, I wish you the best of luck with sales and staying alive.

There is a reason for that, those studios that made the originals of those games, get bought out by the big publishers who remake it and extend it into worthlessness. Many of today's "modern games" lack play ability and a good story... they usually lack one or the other or both... but people don't find out till they have bout it... so I know what you mean... That's why I'm drooling for this game and can't wait to just pre-order so I know I have locked in my copy of the game! :D

I sure as hell wouldn't refuse a pre-order. My question is, is there a chance that there can be a pre-order released through Steam? I already have money set aside for Starbound in my Steam Wallet. If not, I totally understand, and will do everything in my power to pre-order it however you choose.

I would gladly pre-order if it were to go up on the site. Opening pre-orders to get to beta faster is a nice idea, as long as it's coming out faster with the things you wanted it to come out with or possibly more. For pre-order "tiers", you basically named off the only things I could think of, those being Soundtrack, art, naming something in the game, etc.

As for the pre-order distribution, I find the Humble Store as a payment system to be a nice and easy way to purchase the game.

I would buy it in a heartbeat, but my payment options are limited(for some reason paypal won't let me link my card to my account)

I will give you all my money right now. :speechless:

Seriously though, Humble Store is a good choice. DRM free and very user friendly. Also easy access to Steam keys if that happens later.

    But seriously. All my money.

Im in, and i prefer steam personally its the only one i know/have and ive bern with them forever. And besides preordering what some games do is a "alpha/beta supporter pakage" where u get unique in game bonuses depending on the tier($) of pakage, this works well for u to get extra money from those willing to put down and they get sonething in return.

It sounds good, I would like 2-pack and 4-packs for friends like soudescolado said, if you have paypal support I will preorder and if that helps you getting the game released sooner it's even better!

This sounds like a fantastic idea.
I think the most important part of this is the fans will feel like you are committed if you do this.
Plus if anyone is as excited as I am...
Please do this. Please give us a preorder.

I would definitely pre-order as soon as we can!

    I, personally, don't think I'd order any 'add-ons'...

Not sure what all the purchasing options exactly are... but being able to use a credit card/debit card or a paypal kind of thing is most convenient, I think. =D

    CAN'T WAIT!

"So what do you think guys, does this sound viable to you?" It seems amazing :D

"If we do tiers, what kind of rewards would you like to see?" The ability to create your own monster and create other things.

"Is the 2013 timeframe too large? Or is opening preorders a good thing if it allows us to get the beta out faster?" I would like to see you spend more time on the game, but a preorder would allow you to continue making it while we're giving you money. I would like to See Starbound out in at least Q2-Q3 of the year :D

I'm almost positive everyone would be willing to pre-order. Some people might be a bit iffy because they don't know what they're getting, but seriously, there's been enough info about the game that you have a pretty good idea. I mean if it's anything like Terraria, which its going to be better, then it's going to be good.

I'm curious about the way the pre-order would work, do you get sent a key that you can put in to get the pre-order? I ask because I may buy multiple copies, or would I have to wait for the steam keys for that? Either way, I plan to pre-order for myself as soon as I can. If it helps the game get produced faster, I'm all for it.

A good deal of people know that most of the Starbound crew quit their jobs to work on the game, and this will help a lot I'm sure. ^^ Keep up the good work Chucklefish.
