I would pre-order whenever it is available to us.
Steam offers a wide variety of payment services and I was wondering what you're making use of? You're dealing with a community that have users coming from different countries with different options. For instance, I'd love to see an iDEAL payment service because it would be very useful for users residing in the Netherlands who have a bank account.

If you are going for tiers, I can only think of: Starbound OST, artwork/concept art, exclusive wallpaper/poster etc.
You have announced the game very early but 2013 is a great year to release Starbound. Please don't postpone it anymore. I know you want to deliver a whole great game with lots of rich content and availability and I cannot wait for that day to come.

Sounds great, but can we choose to waive the pre-order discounted price? Indie devs get shafted by steam, and I'd rather just give you guys all of what you ask for instead of some.

If the pre-order system helps you release the beta faster. I sign on that!

In regards of the payment, humble store is nice :)

I will be pre ordering as soon as its available :D

    Zellman Existential Complex

Yes, I would preorder. Just knowing that I have it coming is enought, anything else is a huge bonus.
Never expected a cheaper pre-order or any extras! You are awesome for even considering it.

I will probably decide to preorder at a level greater than the normal price, especially if there's a discount, it seems sad but indie games give me much more pleasure recently than the big games I regularly pay $50-$60 for. I'd definitely be willing to pay at that price point for the game alone.

Also I would prefer any payment option that accepts paypal, it helps me keep my online purchases organized.

    Concisely:
Yes, having a pre-order is a good thing if it helps get Starbound out faster.
2013 is a bit of a wide timeframe on a beta release, please be more specific.
I can pay by Paypal today, I know of no more secure method of money transfer.
Looking at it from a business perspective, preorders show proof of interest and help generate buzz - what every new company wants!

I said it before and I'll say it again, if pre-ordering lets me get some hands on time with this game's beta, then I'd pre-order it right now.
I think the whole tier thing that some kickstarters and now some Steam games seem to be doing is cool, where you have unlock tiers that get unlocked at a certain number of pre-orders, that could perhaps unlock some of the things you're suggesting (like an artbook and soundtrack). This would be separate from kickstarter's pledge tiers and something that's unlocked for every pre-order.
But yeah, all I need to pre-order is some promise of beta access, and of course the ability to actually pre-order - some location where I can send my money. :D

Why don't you make it so you can choose how much you want to pay for the preorder? little for people who cant afford it or high for people who can. :3

I love this idea! I would love to preorder this game to help fund the devs and help the game come out faster! I'd even love to pay more than the basic cost of the game to help out even more whether I get any rewards from it or not. I do like the idea of getting an art book, however, but that's only if it's one of the reward tiers.

    Sounds great.
Something regarding the steam key after the beta is done: How will the activation key be given to the people who have preordered game? Email, forum message, or what?

I will preorder the shit out of this shit, and advocate everyone I know to do the same.

  19. Elektroshock

    Elektroshock Void-Bound Voyager

I wish to pre-order so that I can confirm a copy as I may not have the cash when the game finally comes around. It does not bother if there is a beta or not. Although, if it means taking a lot of time to limit the beta (If it is limited) then I do not wish there to be one. On the matter of the pre-order it is good that it will help the team stay focused on one line of work. I believe that is a massive benefit. I would purchase from the humble store. Steam has just released the "Early Access" section of their store so maybe that is something to look into?

I can't think of a single downside to opening up for preorders, other than possibly doing it too soon. Honestly though, it's been a year since Starbound was announced, and even today it's more than mature enough to take in preorders.
