If you're having an issue with the game, take some time to explain what it is, and possible ideas to help solve the problem. It's as easy as that.

I keep seeing all these threads threatening to stop playing the game, or outraged about changes being made. This is not helpful in any way. Nobody will take your words seriously, so you're just wasting your time raging out for no reason.

Again, if you have issues with the beta phase, take some time to thoroughly explain what it is you think should be changed. Try to be helpful and make suggestions. From what I have seen Chucklefish is very open to community feedback and has implemented several features based on the voice of the community.

If you want Starbound to be as good as possible, then do your best to help with the beta testing phase, otherwise uninstall the game and wait for full release.

Well it is partly due to the sheer number of people who haven't the slightest idea as to what a beta is and how one should handle a beta.

And to be honest such people have nobody to blame but themselves for their chronic ignorance.

To be somewhat helpful here is a link for those ignorant individuals. (Click--->LINK<---Click)

Tone arguments are stupid logical fallacies.

If a player is legitimately upset or frustrated with the game, that should be more pertinent to the developers. If they have any interest in the long-term health of the game, they should be acutely aware of what changes cause frustration or displeasure with the game and avoid samesuch moves in the future, lest you drive away chunks of your playerbase.

While I agree with your statement, I highly doubt the people who do make those kinds of threads/posts will read this.

Amen brother! Amen! I by the way love this game. The 500,000 Dps Swords were fun for about 2 mins I am glad the fixed that.

he stated multiple times that people should say what they find wrong with the game clearly. essentially saying what the devs said when they talked about how the beta would work.

I think what Knawx is trying to convey is that typically the "rage posts" where a player is threatening to quit the game do not provide any constructive guidance to the developers that help to isolate the issue that is frustrating them in the first place. Knawx gives a good recommendation to sit and think through what is bugging you and how to articulate it to the dev.

Yelling louder and being emotional doesn't mean you have a valid argument or are providing any useful information to the dev. If that tone was paired with valid and critical analysis of elements of the game, and possibly suggestions to alleviate the issue, then tone can be helpful. Unfortunately, most of the impassioned arguments that Knawx is referencing are nothing like what I described.

Its not free from emotion, it is however well articulated and understandable.

Okay, but one of which he all but called out by title... is level-headed, has salient points of complaint and feedback, and (of course) got shit on by the rest of the community. (I am talking about this one, by the way.)

As far as I'm concerned, a topic that ways "I'm discouraged and don't want to play anymore" should be paid more attention than another hundred "oh yes everything's so wonderful and great!" topics.

Emotions are fine, but letting emotions get the best of you -- to the point where your thread is nothing but anger/drama/etc with no constructive feedback -- is silly. "This mechanic made me feel ___ because ___" vs "This sucks! Everything sucks! I'm leaving!"

Similarly, responding to such threads with petty, dismissive answers -- especially when ten people have already done so -- is just as bad. Somebody needs to initially respond with "This has been said before and offers no new feedback" and then the rest of the forum needs to let it go, not devolve into repetitive back-patting.

I think the problem is, many people don't really understand what is a beta, or are simply not used to playing an unfinished build of a game.

The reality is, many people are approaching the beta with expectations as if it is a finished, fun-to-play product already. And of course, react adversely when it doesn't play like a finished, polished and balanced game, threatening to stop playing, expressing disappointment and anger, and a whole truckload of unconstructive ranting.

Maybe the devs should make a reminder screen every time you load up the game, where you have to click a button to proceed. Like the screen you need to pass every time you click on the "Forums" button from the main page.

Funny, that prior to the beta's release, there were so many people saying "Just release the beta already! We can test for bugs in the beta! We don't care if the game isn't polished or balanced yet, just let us play the beta! It looks ready to play already!"

Well, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. This beta, like every other game's beta, WILL be a roller coaster ride of good changes, bad, game breaking changes, enormous sweeping changes like the recent revamp on planet/tier/threat/weapon damage systems which will break everything for awhile, and game-stopping changes for some people.

Don't get me wrong, people responding in the community are no better. The temperance and tact is needed on both sides of the fence. I just spent about 10 minutes reading through the post you referenced and although it is sad, I am not surprised to see how quickly loudmouth "core players" jumped on the OP without actually providing tangible counters to his arguments or experiences. On top of the fact that their responses were generally unhelpful and negative in tone.

Everyone just needs to be nicer :)

Yeah. Like, I get the irritation at things like complaint about character wipes - that should be headed off at the pass by the nature of Progenitor phase.

But criticism about game mechanics and the direction of the game's design is half of the reason Progenitor phase exists (the other being bug hunting).

Agreed. Beta phases really tend to polarize a community. It always seems weird to me to see players rabidly defend an element of the game or state of the game in beta with little logic other than "l2play" and "things are fine the way they are. NO CHANGE.". I am sure Chucklefish wants nothing more than to properly balance the game and make sure it has all the right features to be the best game it can possible be. Things are in a state of heavy upheaval at the moment and the best thing we can do is provide well thought out, and articulate feedback on our pain points and suggestions.

Now if we can just get the rest of the internet to understand that :)
