If thats the case I'd just avoid the servers that don't allow pre-existing characters.

Probably people viewing it as a Terraria clone. We've already seen it happen a lot so far.

Every single friend I try to show it to...
    "Looks like a Terraria clone"
    "Oh so it's like Terraria"
"Why buy that when I can play Terraria?"

    and then occasionally...
    "That kinda looks like Minecraft"

Funnily enough this is actually something the comunity itself dreamt up. It reminds me of the space marine forum in that way, only this time it's much more severe.

For the Terraria remarks, just say it's the same genre. That should shut them up :p

As for the Minecraft remarks... those friends need help.

Not as bad as the guys who call it a call of duty clone.

Anything in the that is has mining, crafting, and squares (or cubes) will be considered a minecraft clone. That is only because Minecraft is the most well know of the genre (Terreria is likely the second).

I used to think of Terraria as a 2D minecraft (at first), then i played it and realized the only thing in common were the 3 things i listed. I have a feeling it will be the same for Starbound

I had a problem with that statement when i saw it. I think of a clone as being like what Minetest-c55 was to minecraft (not i have not played minetest in a while). Basically a copy of the game with little to know change. Starbound seems to spice enough up to be more of a Terraria derivative rather then a space-clone. Lastly people will refer to something as a clone of something the average (gamer) person will know of.

My biggest fear is that the team might not be able to implement several of the awesome ideas they have. That or some of the people who preorders will start to fill with venom from waiting and everything will go sour.

I know what you're saying, but that's just how some people have viewed Starbound so far. And it saddens me that they need to see it as a clone rather than a derivation or, my personal favorite, spiritual successor.

I think that will subside when the game is playable and people can see it is not just one of those "X but in Y" situations. I actually started thinking about that after watching a youtube video and seeing "Looks like another Terraria clone" in the comments and for some reason I felt irked. Then I realized it was that clone makes me think of some of the minecraft clones i saw on x-box (i don't own on so i might be wrong) but kept thinking "Nice.... but it feels like it's just Minecraft with X changed or Y added". I think we are kinda conditions to see something that looks similar as a clone first rather then a derivative or a spiritual successor. Kinda sad to think about really.

I fear badly implemented combat: stupid mobs, weapons that act all the same with different stats, things like that. At the moment, my fear is that spears can't aim in any direction and just act like a long thrusting sword.

I'm afraid the game will feel to linear and predictable. I want it to be kind of random in how things happen.
I dont want to be able to predict what is going to happen either in the story or how the game progresses overall.

Like others have said: The combat. Too little enemy variety (meaning you can take one combat tactic and apply it to more than half the enemies in the game), lame bosses (ect. boss has 3 attacks and only 1 phase but takes 10 minutes to kill.), weapons that do mostly the same thing, bad level design in pre-made missions and a few weapons dominating pvp.
