You build up my hopes, then crush them.

Waltzing across a planet and come upon an Apex lab, it has a tech chest in it. I get a little excited as to what wonders I would be plundering! I open it to find 15 pixels..... Why do you do this to me Starbound? I kind of feel like the tech chests should be limited to high grade loot not iron or a banana.

 

Trollbound is working 100%.

 

That's not so bad. I found two torches in a high-tech chest on my planet.

I guess the Apex still revere the flames eh?

 

High-tech chests in structures can give anything, however high-tech chests all by themselves give tech.

 

Understand that there are two types of high tech chests. One is blue, one is green.

Only green ones give you tech.

 

AFAIK, if you didn't have to navigate, destroy (or bypass) a gigantic maze of tesla spikes, then you aren't guaranteed to get a tech.

 

I'm not saying I want tech. I'm saying I want something that isn't so mundane. Throw in some powerful weapons or some NPC spawners, something more futuristic that you would expect to find in a high-tech chest.

 

That sounds like a good idea, actually. I wouldn't cut out bananas though, because finding bananas in an Apex chest makes perfect sense.

 

Considering it's the type of lab that anyone can just wander in to and loot I think it's pretty fair that there's nothing super powerful in them.

Although there are green tech chests with tech in them lying about on some planets surfaces...

 

Even doing those jump puzzles isn't guaranteed tech. I've had at least 20 of those dungeons that lead to dead ends with zero rewards.

Blue High-tech chest can give tech too the one I found was in an apex lab with a huge way with electric spikes everywhere and poison pool.

 

Fun fact, the bananas found in Apex tech chests are prototype bananas for next years model. Miniknog bananas, they probably won't kill you if you eat them. And you're going to eat them.

 

So, I've tried on two different computers now to find any techs other than Pulse Jump or Energy Dash. Thus far, since entering the Koala thread of updates, I've been miserably unsuccessful. This is across dozens of different planets, two different computers and universes, and my endless frustration. Anyone else having this problem?

That's right, an Apex portal-like dungeon and its reward.
You see that chest over there? Pretty cool, right? WELL BOO-MO**********-HOO because all I got instead of that chest was some coal in a small patch of dirt !
It bugged and spawned some useless dirt and coal instead of that chest, stupid game!

I think I'm going to cry now ;_;

 

At times, I almost wish there was something else in those chests, after finding my 5th energy dash. I had probably 15 duplicates before I found the butterfly tech.

I do agree to a point; chests should be relative to what they contain. I have come across tech chests buried deep in the ground containing fairly low tier metal bars and not a whole lot else.

 

I agree with chests needing to have better loot. Terraria got you to explore by having each chest at least have something that most people would want.

 

The problem is gear definition right now is so limited that that would lead to power creap.

There need to be more ways that gear can be made distinctive because when its just DPS you get one of two scenarios.

"WTF, I can craft anything better than I find in chests, this game boring"

and

"This game is boring anything I find in chests is better than I can craft, WTF"

 

If you look at the treasure files in the game folder, you quickly realize that Chucklefish did not put any effort yet in chest contents.
It's basically a few random items, just to 'populate' chests.

I'm sure they will improve this later on.
