Well, yeah. It does have to be a very specific idea. But an Idea is an Idea. Regardless of how specific it is. :p

I really tire of clone accusation threads like this getting started.

Starbound looks like a great game, but they did Not invent:
    • the sandbox genre
    • the platforming genre
    • Terraforming mechanic (existed before Minecraft in Infiniminer and earlier)
    • the space theme
    • pixel graphics!
The team behind starbound are expanding on these concepts in their own way, whilst being driven forward by ideas from the community, which is great, but they don't own a monopoly on any of the above.

Even sandbox games with the terraforming mechanic existed before Minecraft and Terraria came to be (e.g. google Infiniminer on which Minecraft was inspired by).
Inspiration is what drives the industry forward.
If you listened TiY's livechat, he reveals alot of the ideas in Starbound belonged to other games first.
E.g. gravity gun inspired from half life 2 and Little Big Planet.
Counter blocking/dual weilding/farming are mechanics already in many other RPGs.

Their are other games in the emerging sandbox adventure platformer genre, created by passionate developers, who want to give people an evolving content fluid game that everyone has input to. Consider this list:

"OMG their are other indie developers making games with terraforming, infinite tile based worlds, exploration and platforming! burn them at the stake!"
At least that seems to be the attitude of quite a few people.

Starbound backed by a millionaire, and a larger than your average indie dev. team seems to be one of the biggest in terms of content, but the others will surely be able to co-exist because they each have their own unique implementations, graphics, mechanics, themes etc.

They are by no means rip-offs of each other, but different games in the same genre.

You don't have as many people today calling zombie games as a knockoff of resident evil, or tower defense games a knockoff of...[whatever the first game in that genre was]. but back in the day I'm sure the world was rife with consumers accusing developers.

No one can own an idea either. It's very possible for people to think of the same idea independently of each other (especially in regard to game mechanics). So patenting ideas wastes time and kills innovation.

As per the word of Notch

So please, can we stop with the clone accusations and start rating games on their individual merits rather than similarities
