If someone hasn't already told you to do this, look up intellectual property and software patents. You can essentially copyright an idea as long as it is within reasonable boundaries and you have the ability to carry out the idea (ex.: you can't copyright hovercars unless you have a design for one, and then your copyright only prevents people from making similar designs to yours. ypu don't need have made the hovercar yet, all you need is evidence that it is possible for you to make one.) This is all from memory so I could be wrong, I am not sure exactly how the law works.

Not sure if this already been answered sense this post is so old, but I have been gone, and just now see that you asked that so here we go: FTL - Faster Than Light. Little indie game, available on steam, if you learn little about it, you will see that the game mentioned in OP is very similar to FTL, and not really Starbound.

    Yea someone answered me.
And honestly that game seems really awesome and I may pick it up sometime.

I see I have not missed much while real life stole me away with a dastardly plot known as Finals Week. And I must admit I groaned when I saw another one of these threads, but the hammy love letter to pulp sci-fi made up for it. Overall looks like Xcom met Faster Than Light and decided to collab on a nod to Kirk-era Star Trek.

Star Command is strategy game, Starbound is NOT. Therefor not the same at all.

Although, THIS does have some similarities, and AWFUL graphics. (Just look at the "jumping", wow...) And even that doesn't make me think 'Starbound clone'.
Someone plz close, lock, and delete this thing...

While I understand the dislike of this game, I have been using it to bide time until Starbound is released. Its not a bad game and because the two are similar do not mean one should not exist.

You won't see me complaining if we see more games like Starbound and Terraria.

The world needs more 2d adventure games!

There's too much focus on AAA shooter clones these days.

Yeah I've been a bit iffy about that game as well. I think one of the main reasons I don't like it much is the sharp high res graphics. Every 2D game I see with that sort of graphical style just looks...wrong to me somehow. The retro big-pixel style just seems to fit 2D games better.

I was actually talking about this thread...

I wasn't complaining about the game, I was just saying that despite the similarities it never occurred to me as a 'clone' of Starbound.

    EDIT: Quote Fail, sry

For real. It is one of the reasons I stopped writing reviews for different games sites. Everyone wanted to write about the big ass shooter or Madden 3000 or whatever. Totally ignoring the entire Indie scene. I wrote a review for Dungeons of Dredmore that me editor initially shot down because no one wants to read about roguelikes.

Now don't get me wrong, I love me some CoD or some football. But, it is kind of like eating the same thing day after day. It gets old. Gotta mix it up.

From watching the video, this looks much more like FTL than Starbound. Just because you explore space doesn't mean its like Starbound. In-fact I don't see why you would think this game is like Starbound at all ... Other than the graphics and Star in the name.

It looks like a good game with an alright amount of potential, heck, I might try it out some time. I don't see any relations or similarities apart from just the true fact it's 2d-ish and it is a pixel game, that's all. Oh well.
