I agree with OP. If you cannot find coal just give up. rofl No seriously though if you cannot find the most common ore then you must be blind. :/

 

The issue i have with using coal...is torches...that's what i use coal for..i don't WANT to waste it on fuel. If they make it so i can cook unrefined wood into charcoal for torches, then i'm good.

 

Said charcoal would also need to be usable for making Steel/Durasteel/etc., but I agree.

 

The idea behind this change is to encourage players to get more involved in their planet, rather than beaming down, running around it, slicing down every tree they see and simply beaming back up. Some of the most interesting biomes are underground; including Mushrooms, Crystal, ice, etc, and most people don't even know they're there. Coal is readily available and can even be found on the surface in large veins. I feel that using wood as a fuel makes no sense, regardless of whether this is a game or not.

 

Valid points but you're mostly forgetting that past tier 2 there's much better fuel alternatives.Also, as it's currently playing out, all resources stay useful. If this wasn't the case, there would be no uranium,

True. You can also easily run across the planet surface and dig up only what you can see from there, and that amount will be half a tank of fuel already. I don't see the problem not being able to use wood anymore since they're both almost equally common.

It literally takes about 30 minutes to get a copper pick and then you'll be grabbing 9 chunks of coal so fast as you explore you planet that you won't even notice it. Suddenly you'll look in your inventory and you'll have about 200 coal just from exploring the surface, which is plenty to make a stack of torches and start traveling to other planets in the system. Remember, fuel costs to planets within the system you are in are extremely lower than fuel costs for traveling outside the current system.

Obviously environmental activists have threatened to boycott Starbound unless more trees were saved from endless slaughter by greedy Space-explorers. Wow you're pathetic, you realize they have increased the coal amount? And if they haven't it is SO easy to get.
You can fly to another solar system from about 10 mins of gathering coal. How rapidly were you travelling? Did you not
spend at least 40 minutes on a world at a time? You weren't really exploring if the longest you spent on a planet
was like 3 minutes. Yeah your opinion is completely invalid.

 

I'm sorry, where exactly was the "YOU MUST SPEND X MINUTES PER PLANET MINIMUM, SO SAYETH FORUMS POSTER KELPHY" in the patch notes?

 

You bought a game almost entirely based around mining and yet you're upset that you now have to mine? I'm confused...
