Yeah.... I'm not gonna play this.

I had a ton of fun playing the first versions of the beta and the recent patch seemed alright, the new weapon system seems much better than the armor pen one. BUT after about 30 minutes of playing around on the starter world I wanted to start exploring, the part of the game I really enjoy, and it wouldn't accept any wood.

Really? Only coal works now for starting out? If I wanted to spend half my time digging for coal I'd go play minecraft or terraria. I know some people prefer the mining parts of games like this, but I want to planet hop and see the things to be seen. I really they fix this, either by adding wood back or taking coal out and replacing it with some kind of fuel crafting. I plan to check the game out with each patch, but until they fix the fuel system I won't be playing. This fuel thing has pretty much turned me around on the game where a week ago I was singing its praises to my friends saying they should get it, but now I'm telling them to avoid it until the game with so much potential for exploration stops trying to hamstring players.

People have been asking for charcoal. However if this has changed your mind then I wish the best to you and hope a change in the future brings you back!

You could, I don't know, explore the underworld.
Get this: you could find a cave, fight some mobs, and find some coal.
Yes, you can find coal in caves. It doesn't require much digging.

Seriously, the only thing bothering you is fuel? Fuel?!

Seems like a nit-picky reason to not play a game you already paid for...

Geez, it doesn't take much for somes to stop playing a game still heavily under dev.

I speculate that the reason why they removed wood as a source of fuel was to promote more underground exploration. You're quitting a game because you have to do more work to explore new worlds?

Even before the new patch which added a ton of ore it was easy to get coal. I don't even go out of my way to get it and I end up with a ton of it in my inventory just digging for other stuff. Yeah, it was easier to just go grab some wood, but it's not a game breaking change in any respect.

Wow! Thank you! We're all EVER so interested in your opinion, because you have to spend a few minutes digging some coal blatantly obvious on the surface! Oh no! How, oh so horrible!

It's not a huge issue though, it's only a bit tough at start. You can travel to the moons/planets in the same area without consuming fuel though, so you mostly have 1-2 more worlds to explore. After you have a decent pick, coal will be kinda really easy to get in large numbers, thus you can travel to other planets in the solar system.

Maybe it's the way I play the game, but I explore everything I can on the planets I'm stuck with before moving on or preparing to move on to the next ones.

With the previous version, half an hour was all it took to fill up the fuel meter to max.

How dare you take my line.

Op use coal, maybe later trees can be turned to charcoal. Really only coal works as of this patch, so you answered your own question with the question which in the end was an answer.

I think it's a little immature that what ruins the game for you is being "forced" to head underground. Like you were content with only ever exploring topside on planets, even though there's a myriad of treasures under the ground, in caves, and temples and stuff. But if you want to ignore half of the game's content because you don't like digging, feel free.

Another one of these. talk about first world problems (excuse the pun) there is enough coal on the surface to get you to another planet and off your home world with no hassle at all. I for one found wood to be a scarcer resource than coal in the first beta run, now coal is even more abundant.

I cant understand how you not wanting to spend 5 mins getting coal is your basis for not playing.

Either way I wish you well and hope your friends have more sense than to listen to you.

Simple way is to so surface mining of coal to get around 100 or so max. Then fuel your ship and look for a large desert planet.

Once you are at the desert planet do the following steps:

1: Find fine sand/gravel on the surface.

2: Stand in 1 place and mine your feet, the whole area collapses to you, releasing all ore to be picked up in the process (yes even coal!)

3: Start sand surfinf by running back and forth whilst mining your feet so you don't get stuck

    4: Massive ore profit.

Now I used to do this on desert planets in the previous patch and ended up with over 100 of each starter ore in under 5 minutes along with some gold/silver and occasionally tech or chests w/ contents if lucky.

It works, it's not hard and it totally solves the perceived wood 'issue' that you seem to have. Just remember to bring torches and to get out....expect to die to fall damage :p

Caves are kind of boring atm. Wish it was more like terraria or Minecraft caverns, rather than boring, thin, small, veins.

you could go to a desert planet and start collapsing sand, that makes a small cavern into a massive open space. lol
